details DESIGN

Add strength with as-cast stiffeners and cored pockets.

• Determining the viability of as-cast cored pockets for weight reduction as well as structural strength largely depends on their location with reference to the part- ing plane.

• Webs and cross ribs in place of thicker cross sections provide the required stiff ness and save weight. Cast iron mechanical properties are directly infl uenced by the section thickness. T inner is stronger than thicker, which is counterintuitive to a lot of design engineers.

Design fastening/mounting features to be easily accessible to feed, to ensure soundness.

• T e design must ensure the attach- ment lugs do not exhibit undesirable discontinuities after machining and drilling, which could be detrimental to the overall system performance.

• Design engineers must spend adequate time to evaluate various alternatives before fi nalizing the parting planes for the pattern and corebox and the orien- tation with regards to the gravity.
