Keep Feet Fit!

t’s May and the major European Autumn/Winter footwear shows are over for another year. With just under 19,000 visitors over four days in April at GDS Dusseldorf, the show recorded a 10%

decrease compared with the previous year. However, the organisers Messe Düsseldorf, are confident that the new earlier summer dates will see GDS make a clear move forward, running from 30 July to 1 August 2014 as well as from 4 to 6 February 2015. National Shoe Fitting Week kicked off last month, under the

banner Keep Feet ‘Fit’. A plethora of shoe shops and podiatrists embraced the Society of Shoe Fitters’ campaign, displaying posters and running competitions and events for their customers. This campaign was a tremendous effort on Secretary Laura West's part and she is to be congratulated. But, the brands must play their part and support their footwear retailers, otherwise they will stand to lose many of their customers in future if nothing is done. If you’re looking for some great footwear buys this year, check

out our Editor’s Choice pages for our Best In Shows Children’s footwear. While, our Holiday Kit pages, include some fabulous in-stock styles offering great margins, which promise to fly off your shelves this summer. Also, in this edition our intrepid footwear reporter Dawn Smith

road tests a lifestyle trainer from Waldlaufer. She found the quality of the shoes, the softness of the leather and the admiring opinions of her friends to be sufficient endorsement. Finally, an independent footwear retailer, who has organised an

international charity concert, is hoping local generosity will help make a difference to some of the world’s most disadvantaged children. David Gummers, who owns F Dickinson Footwear in Ulverston,

Cumbria, admits he doesn't know much about music, but has a wealth of experience when it comes to shoes. Despite his inexperience, he has organised a charity concert in Cape Town on May 30 and is hoping to make enough money to provide new shoes for more than 100 South African orphans. He is auctioning off a pair of Anatomic men’s shoes, with all

profits going towards the children at the Baphumelele orphanage. Anyone wishing to contribute is asked to email their bid to david@fdickinsonfootwear.co.uk, the winner will receive a pair of shoes in their size. Huge thanks to all those independent retailers who kindly send us

their Best Sellers details each month. I’m delighted to report that another three shops joined our Footwear Today Best Sellers Panel last month. If you’re interested becoming a panel member, do let me know, I’d be delighted to welcome you! For the next issue, I’d be very interested to hear from footwear

retailers on your take on the recent trade shows, which ones you attend and which footwear/accessories you bought and why? Also, any problems you may have encountered when buying footwear? Fingers crossed, the sun will shine when it’s supposed to this year and we’ll all have a great summer!
