More Mickey! Disney expands Shanghai plans
An extra RMB 5 billion ($800m/€580m) has been committed to the Shanghai Disney Resort by the Walt Disney Company and its local partner the Shanghai Shendi Group. The two parties will use the money primarily for additional attractions, entertainment and other offerings to increase capacity at the theme park.
“Since we broke ground in Shanghai we’ve been very impressed with the growth of China’s economy, especially the rapid expansion of the middle class and the significant increase in travel and tourism,” notes Walt Disney Company chairman and CEO, Robert Iger. “Our accelerated expansion, including additional attractions and entertainment, will allow us to welcome more guests for a spectacular Disney experience on opening day.”
“Like all of our parks, Shanghai Disney Resort was designed to expand over time,” adds Walt Disney Parks & Resorts chairman Tom Staggs. “This investment allows us to bring some of those additions online earlier. The expansion underscores the tremendous opportunity we see in Shanghai and demonstrates our long-term commitment to
and confidence in China.” China’s travel and tourism market continues to boom. An “income qualified population” of 330 million people is located within a three-hour travel time of the Shanghai Disney Resort site in Pudong. The number of upper-middle class and affluent households in the country is expected to grow 18% annually until 2022, according to McKinsey. Shanghai Disney Resort is scheduled to open late next year. At the heart of the development will be the Shanghai Disneyland theme park, surrounded by two themed hotels, shopping, dining, entertainment and additional resort facilities. Shanghai Shendi Group owns 57% of the shares of the owner companies, with Disney will holding the remaining 43%. Disney is also the majority shareholder in the management company responsible for creating, developing and operating the resort. Financing of the additional investment

Sister company Jora Entertainment will be involved in the design of the audio and special effects for the park. Jora Vision has been actively working on designs for the park since last year. Hefei is located bout two hours west of Nanjing.

shanghaidisneyresort.com Bear flume
This is the new mini flume from ABC Rides at Traumland auf der Bärenhöhle (Dreamland on the Bear Cave) in Germany. Isn’t it cute? Located at the park south of Stuttgart, the ride features a 16 x 26-metre footprint and a water course of 105m. The maximum height is just 4m. Four specially-designed boats were delivered, with a bear accompanying passengers on each ride, which lasts two-minutes. Hourly capacity is 300. The Swiss manufacturer is also working on several other new water ride projects, including what it says will be the world’s steepest flume ride at Knuthenborg Safaripark in Denmark, which should open this month.
