April Editorial

by Ron Samson, Associate Publisher During a brief meeting with McKeil Marine in mid April Marine

Matters was told that ice on Lake Erie was still causing huge delays to normal shipping schedules. It bears truth that some pundits had predicted mid to late April before the lakes would be clear of ice.

However, now the birds are beginning to sing in the early morning

signalling that spring really is about to unfold and as I see the buds beginning to emerge I have cause to rejoice.

Aldert departed for Europe this month and will cover the European

Breakbulk conference bringing more international colour to our pub- lication. There will be video coverage on the conference forthcoming in the May issue. We wish all our North American friends exhibiting prosperous opportunities and a big high five to Alan Taylor for his efforts on promoting Seaway interests abroad.

Ken Hansen has taken a break this month as his teaching duties

have kept him very busy marking essays and getting ready for the final exam at the Dalhousie University. Ken is also on the Editorial Board for Canadian Naval Review magazine. The Canadian Naval Re- view is published quarterly by the Centre for Foreign Policy Studies (CFPS) at Dalhousie University. It is a professional journal examining a wide range of maritime security issues from a Canadian perspec- tive. It focuses on strategic concepts, policies, historical perspectives and operations of the Canadian Navy, plus oceans policy, marine affairs and national security in general. This initiative brings together members of the Canadian defence and academic communities and is a component of the CFPS’s Maritime Security Program.

This month we share some observations on what Free Trade

Agreements offer and what doesn’t seem to work. Ken Westcar shares some thoughtful insights in the context of

Diane Francis’ book which theorizes a merging of resources and economies of Canada and the United States. Ken will be a presenter at the May Mari-Tech Conference in Niagara Falls which we will cover as his topic will be the future of LNG in the marine industry.

We also look at the Straight of Canso from an historical point of

view. There have been boom years and bust years. Are they really on the verge of another boom?

As a former shipowner Aldert has authored numerous critical in-

sights into marine insurance as it applies to cargo and passenger vessels dating from its inception in the 1500’s to its evolution in today’s economy.

We hope you enjoy this issue and have already begun work on our May issue. n
