pleasant times especially for this maritime economy. Despite ongoing federal subsidies for rail sector iron,


steel, coal and the fisheries suffered greatly during the Depression. The second world war brought a blip of prosperity to areas serving as air and naval bases. Government incentives


attracted some industry and while there were some successes there were also many failures. By early 2000 the steel industry was dead and the last coal mine was closed
