editor’s note

A wishy-washy name for a vague concept?

“SO MR SALESMAN, you have this wonderful new concept that you’re trying to sell me? What is its name? Tell me more about it.” “Well, it’s called ‘the Internet of Things’ and will transform the way you do your business.”

“Let me stop you right there. If you think I’m going to invest millions in something called, what was it, the ‘Internet of Things’, then you’re living in Cloud cuckoo land.”

A completely fictitious conversation, maybe, but is the ‘Internet of Things’ – true the IoT abbreviation sounds better – really going to get people excited? Everyone is happy to invest in the ‘data centre’, but if it was called a ‘building for hosting storage and server things’, maybe not. And what if networks were called ‘copper or fibre things’?

The idea behind IoT may well be valid, although one is always curious as to just how far private individuals wish the world of IT to take over their lives, but, please, come up with a better title!

Oh, and better customer service – whether it’s IoT, or just digital business in general – is a must. Some kind gentleman drove into our garden wall the other month, necessitating a call to the insurer (couldn’t be done online). Almost three months later, and still nothing happening – last time I phoned up (again, no option to email), I had to wait an hour before someone answered…

No doubt the insurer in question has Big Data applications coming out of their ears and a huge great data centre or three to process all areas of the business (except, it appears, getting someone to repair a wall!), but in all this move to the digital age, the customer seems to have been forgotten.
