Intelligent Networking with EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT and PROFINET High- Performance Distance Sensors
DP Seals are really on the ball
particular market sector with the unprecedented success of one of its automotive products. The component in question is a high-spec natural rubber ball that DP Seals produce for the hydraulic engine mounts made by DTR VMS Ltd. In the past year alone, well over five million have been supplied – an increase of more than 300% since the depths of the recession in 2009. Trowbridge based DTR VMS is a first tier supplier to the likes of Audi, VW and Mercedes, with its advanced technology products helping to reduce noise, vibration and harshness in a wide range of vehicles. “The company first joined forces with us in 2002, making their choice on the basis of outstanding QCD performance indicators, and since then, we’ve consistently been recognised as one of their most reliable and trusted suppliers,” commented Andrew Piper, DP Seals Technical
W
Director. Although a seemingly simple product, every single ball we produce has to meet exceptionally stringent standards of size, sphericity and quality, since it is instrumental in preventing leakage from the engine mount to ensure the desired characteristics are maintained throughout its lifetime.

englor sensoric GmbH has expanded its product range for Industrial Communication
to include the EtherNet/IP and EtherCAT protocols. The high performance Distance Sensors included in the der OCP range, as well as the associated Switches and Junctions, now provide for consistent communication right on down to the field level with two further protocols in addition to PROFINET. A compact housing (50 x 50 x 30 mm), IP67 protection, an integrated web server, a graphic display, location-independent configuration and minimal wiring effort thanks to PoE: the OCP range has been distinguished in the past by numerous functions based on PROFINET, and will now be supplemented with two further highlights by adding the widespread EtherNet/IP and EtherCAT protocols. EtherNet/IP and EtherCAT as an Ideal Extension The OCP product range, equipped thus far with RS-232 or PROFINET, will be furnished with an additional, standardized communications interface by adding the real-time EtherCAT protocol and, in combination with power over Ethernet (PoE) and distributed clock technology, will thus be transformed into a genuine expert in the field of industrial communication. The time-stamp function is above all important when spatially distributed processes are coordinated with each other and precise synchronization of all Ethernet users is required. Beckhoff Automation’s EtherCAT protocol, which has been an international standard since 2007, supports nearly all types of topologies thanks to its minimal wiring requirements. Transmission of large amounts of data and short cycle times are two of the protocol’s impressive strengths. As a member of the EtherCAT Technology Group user organization, and as host of the 2013 European EtherCAT Plug Celebration, wenglor actively supports integration and further development of this protocol. The EtherNet/IPE interface introduced in March 2000 is every bit as helpful as well, which controls roughly 33% of the worldwide protocol market in the meantime and is well accepted above all in the USA. Like PROFINET and EtherCAT, the Ethernet protocol developed by the ODVA (Open DeviceNet Vendor Association) and Rockwell is available with all four variants of wenglor’s OCP range, as well as the company’s three standard Switches.

Kite Packaging launches new website product - Kite Air Shock
out to its major accounts division. The Kite Air Shock has experienced great growth as part of the Major branch business and as a result Kite S3 (Specialist Services and Solutions – Kite’s newly
K
appointed team of highly experience packaging engineers and technologists, who specialise in innovation and supply chain improvement) have worked hard on a consolidated range for its website customers. This includes packs for bottles, crockery and electronic items such as computer tablets. On the bespoke side of things, Kite has recently signed a deal with a large bathroom retailer, and can supply packs suitable for all kinds of goods through its branch operation including baths and televisions. The Kite Air Shock system online offering includes a range of air packs, manufactured from LDPE (Low Density Polyethylene) and PA (Polyamide) to improve air
retention, they consist of several solid air tubes to armour even the most fragile of products. The packs are 98% air and 2% film, pioneering the way for environmentally-friendly solutions, which also reduce delivery costs and warehouse space. The products are also re-usable, recyclable and are designed to remain inflated for an extensive period of time with different sized tubing to suit different sized product specs. As well as this, the Kite team has developed a range of boxes specifically designed for the Air Shock packs which provide further protection for fragile goods
and a consolidated solution for packing and sending out product. Early figures have shown that the Kite Air Shock has saved Kite customers over 15% in pack material costs, as well as providing additional savings in labour and space due to rationalised packing materials and efficiency. A spokesperson for Kite said “The Kite Air Shock is a fantastic product that we are really excited about launching on to the website. This system will
revolutionise the way fragile products are packaged, save on a number of cost variants and reduce damages in transit. It is a great addition to the S3 team portfolio, and will open up some great new markets for us.”
