The latest version of B&R’s SafeDESIGNER tool now makes it possible to process and compare safe INT and DINT signals in addition to linking them mathematically to basic arithmetic operations. Safety oriented function blocks are also available for converting INT and DINT values in either direction. This expansion now rounds off the full numeric range of functions for the Automation Studio 4 development and configuration tool. Since its introduction in 2008, SafeDESIGNER has provided
support for safe INT data types and associated arithmetic operations and comparison functions. This range of functions has been continuously expanded ever since. Users of Smart Safe Reaction technology from B&R can now process safety related speed and position
values and use them to initiate safe machine states. These functions are well suited for cases where requirements go above and beyond the possibilities provided by prepackaged safe motion functions. Possible scenarios include integrating additional safe rotary encoders in a safety application or monitoring several power transmission systems for synchronism. In process control applications, SafeDESIGNER has become a widely used tool well suited for the safe processing of pressure, temperature and flow signals.

drives which have been developed with ease of use and versatility in mind, and VACON 20 micro drives which share the benefits of the VACON 10 products but add programmable controller functionality. With a power range up to 37kW,
VACON 100 X drives feature a die cast metal enclosure with an IP66 ingress protection rating and have an operating temperature range of -40ºC to 60ºC, allowing them to be used in tough operating conditions.

Rotork-Hiller recently received an enquiry to build a fast acting failsafe stop valve actuator for a plant firefighting system. The specification called for a
very compact pneumatically operated actuator, with no springs for the failsafe function, necessitating the provision of a stored energy accumulator. The addition of a conventional accumulator would have exceeded the dimensional
constraints of the specification, so Rotork-Hiller engineers conceived a new design which incorporated the accumulator within the pneumatic actuator. The design eliminated the size problem and freed-up additional space for mounting the controls to the actuator. These controls include filters, regulators, solenoid valves and pressure switches, all contained within the overall actuator dimensions. The controls reduce the customer’s supply pressure of 45
Barg (652 psig) to 31 Barg (450 psig), which is pumped into the accumulator to provide approximately 4.4 litres of storage capacity. The actuator delivers a maximum thrust of 27,617N.
