SENSORS & SENSING SYSTEMS FEATURE MAKING AN IMPACT
Kistler Instruments’ sensors are providing reliability and precision for testing at impact protection solutions company D30
S
ince developing its first impact protection material in 2002, D3O has expanded both its range of
products and international markets by constant product development and attention to product performance and quality. As its products are used in soft body armour for motorcycling, skiing and other sports, as well as industrial and military applications,
consistent quality control is absolutely essential. From its earliest days, D3O’s laboratory has used Kistler Instruments’ sensors for product development testing and quality control. Currently, the company uses a triaxial accelerometer and a force sensor specially calibrated to 25kN, both by Kistler, in an impact test rig used by the company’s development department. The test rig specification is defined by BS EN 1621-1:2012 requirements and test methods for motorcyclists’ clothing to protect against mechanical impact, especially limb joint impact protectors. Process development manager, Chris Meadows, explained that D3O has always used Kistler sensors for product testing since the very beginning. Reliable and accurate testing is essential, not only to meet the British Standard but also to ensure that the company’s products always provide the protection needed in what might be life threatening situations. As D3O continues to expand into new market sectors ranging from skiwear and laptop cases to military applications, quality assurance is paramount to maintain the company’s reputation. The reliability and precision of Kistler’s sensors is helping D3O meet the demanding standards of new markets and applications.

COMPACT, PRECISE AND ROBUST
POSITAL has introduced its new range of magnetic incremental IXARC encoders. The incremental units employ a new sensor that also forms the basis for POSITAL’s latest generation of magnetic absolute encoders. Together with a specially developed signal processing software, the new sensor ensures high precision and dynamics. The incremental encoders allow users to choose
any number of pulses between 1 and 16,384 and provide an accuracy of 12 Bit (0.09°). Available with protection classes up to IP69K, the units have a diameter of 36mm or 58mm. There is a wide range of options for mechanical
integration, such as blind hollow shafts and solid shafts with various diameters as well as different flange and housing sizes. Users can choose between steel, stainless steel (V4A, V2A) and aluminium versions. The new incremental encoders are thus also available as versions for demanding environments (high axel loads, protection ratings up to IP69K, high shock
resistance). As another advantage, the accompanying software allows for complete control over signal processing. In the future, user specific parameter adjustments (e.g. rotational direction, zero pulse position or filter settings) will therefore become possible without any costly changes to the hardware.
