10 minutes extra will help your child to succeed Education Round-Up
W
orld Book Day on 6 March brought out all the favourite characters and super heroes at William Bellamy Primary School on the launch of ‘10 minutes extra’.
The campaign highlights the positive effect that both mothers and fathers have on their children’s academic attainment. Research has repeatedly shown that the most accurate predictor of a child’s achievement is not parental income or social status but the extent to which they create a home environment that encourages learning.
The campaign also puts an emphasis on fathers getting more involved as they play a critical role in helping their children to learn to love reading. Children are twice as likely to read
outside the classroom if they are encouraged to read by both their mother and father. William Bellamy Primary School has invested in new books and phonics resources in a reading push which has included workshops and bedtime story events that involving over 200 parents and has seen 30 per cent more children make better progress in their reading so far this year.
A father with a son at William Bellamy School, David Allen, said: “I think it makes a strong bond between me and my son. I enjoy doing it and we have fun together. “When I read with him it helps him to read better, speak clearer, understand longer words and it also brings us closer as a family unit.” Another father with a daughter at William Bellamy, Fredrick Anwka, said: “We read for at least 15 minutes a day and it boosts my daughter’s confidence and allows her to express herself.
“She learns about different authors and writers and her love of books grows as she progresses.”
Councillor John White, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services at Barking and Dagenham Council, said: “World Book Day was a great day to launch ‘10 minutes extra’, as the aim of the day is to encourage children to explore the joy of reading.
“We need to improve the outcomes for reading at Key Stage 2 and increase the number of our children getting higher levels from age seven to eleven. We also want to remind both mums and dads that their involvement is crucial because they are in the best position to make the critical difference to their children’s future successes.
“The campaign is a reminder for all parents that spending just ten minutes a day reading with their children can make a huge difference to their development and help prepare them for a more successful future and give them the best start in life.”
