Montage sets the scene for new university learning Centre in London
H
eckmondwike FB’s innovative Montage carpet tiles have been specified for a flagship new education centre, known as University Square, a collaboration between the University of East London and Birkbeck University. University Square, which opened in November 2013, features 4,100m² of Montage fibre bonded carpet, which was specified by Make Architects in Flint.
The new £33m education hub provides cutting edge facilities, with flexible teaching and administrative spaces alongside dedicated areas for subjects including Law, Performing Arts, Dance, Music and Information Technology. University Square is already being recognized as a beacon for learning in East London. Montage was installed to all areas by specialist flooring contractors Allard & Company, including lecture theatres, corridors and break-out areas. Craig Carr-Jones, Director of Allard & Company, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, said: “This was a major project and we worked closely with the main contractor to ensure we could meet their timescales. It also involved areas of intricate cutting, with curved platforms in the lecture theatres. This didn’t cause an issue because Heckmondwike’s fibre bonded carpet can be cut, without the risk of raveling or fraying.”
Montage has been assessed by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) and has gained a BRE Global A+ environmental rating for use in office, schools and retail buildings. Like all Heckmondwike FB’s range, Montage will not ravel or fray. It is anti-slip and offers
thermal performance to conserve heat, it also offers acoustic properties which make it perfect for education or commercial projects. It is extremely durable and hard wearing, offering low maintenance costs to the building owner.

Architects create Breeam ‘excellent’ facility using Equitone
EQUITONE [natura] and [textura] from Marley Eternit have helped create the award-winning BREEAM 'Excellent' research facility at Swansea University. The Institute of Life Science building (Phase 2), won the BREEAM Wales Award thanks, in part, to Marley Eternit's EQUITONE architectural fibre cement facade material.
The BREEAM awards recognise only those construction projects that demonstrate ‘excellent’ environmental aspects in their specification, design and construction.
Powell Dobson Architects specified the material because of its aesthetics, which addressed the challenging brief: to deliver a sustainable building whilst working within the constraints of an environment which is suitable for clinical research and trials facilities.
Barrie Jones of Powell Dobson Architects explains: "We specified EQUITONE materials because the contrasting textures and array of colours on offer allowed us to create a visually striking aesthetic. We were delighted to win the BREEAM award and the use of Marley Eternit’s facade materials played a key role as it is able to achieve an A+ rating as defined in the BRE Green Guide to Specification.” u01283 722588
