Italian Technology Award Programs Enter Their Second Decade of Hosting North American Students
Educational programs offer students and faculty a chance to advance learning and stay connected F
or over a decade, the Italian Trade Agency (ITA,
www.italtrade.com) and its partners have sponsored the Italian Technology Award. Re-
cent winners of the IMTTA have been awarded a week or more trip to Italy to gain firsthand knowledge of Italian tech- nology for the machinery manufacturing industries, including machine tools, plas- tic, ceramic, marble and packaging. In 2014, the ITA program will con- nect the students, faculty members and Italian companies and associations that have been part of the program since its inception by establishing an online alumni network of past and present winners. The alumni network will allow participants to continue exchanging ideas, concepts and experiences through social media.
Italian Machine Tool
Technology Award Program Part of the ITA program for years, the Italian Machine Tool Technology Award (IMTTA) program asks students attending premier North American universities to write theses on contemporary innovations and issues taking place in mechanical en- gineering-related industries. Recent winners of the IMTTA have
been awarded a week or longer trip to Italy and have taken part in certification pro- grams such as those offered by the Poly- technic University of Milan. Professors from leading academic institutions noted for their mechanical engineering programs accompany the student winners. The IMTTA is coordinated and spon-
sored through the Italian Trade Agency’s Chicago office and co-sponsored in Italy by UCIMU-SISTEMI PER PRODURRE (the Association of Italian Manufactur- ers of Machine Tools, Robots, Automa- tion Systems and Ancillary Products,
46
www.ucimu.it), and supported in the United States by the Society of Manufac- turing Engineers’ Education Foundation (
www.smeef.org). Matteo Picariello, Trade Commissioner of the Italian Trade Agency’s Chicago of- fice, said, “Faculty participation provides academics with a noteworthy opportunity to experience and learn about Italian ma- chinery and technology and to enhance their programs by sharing such experi- ences upon their return to the classroom.
Italian Packaging Technology
Award Program The Italian Trade Agency also spon-
sors the Italian Packaging Technol-
ogy Award (IPTA). The IPTA program awards student winners with a trip to Italy to visit leading packaging machinery manufacturers. The program is coordinated through the Italian Trade Agency’s Chicago office, and co-sponsored in Italy by UCIMA, the Italian Packaging Machinery Manufactur- ers Association (
www.ucima.it), and in the United States by the Institute of Packag- ing Professionals (
www.iopp.org). Through visits to major Italian compa- nies operating in the sector, students, pro- fessors and business leaders engage in discussions on current challenges and op- portunities within the packaging industry.
Italian Technology Award
Programs in Mexico The Italian Trade Agency Office in Mexico City also organizes various awards within the Italian Technology Award Pro- gram: namely, the Italian Plastic Technol- ogy Award, the Italian Ceramic Technology Award and the Italian Marble Technology Award. Each award is organized along- side its respective Italian industry asso-

Machines Italia Canada Advanced
Manufacturing Symposium Machines Italia and the Italian Trade
Agency, in collaboration with McMaster University, the University of Guelph and the Haltech Innovation Centre, are orga- nizing a one-day symposium on advanced manufacturing
technologies. Specifi-
cally, the event will focus on new innova- tive and advanced materials and related manufacturing processes in the areas of automotive, aerospace, food processing and packaging.
During the course of the symposium, industry experts, will illustrate specific proj- ects, case studies and examples of how the emergence of new materials and inno- vative technologies have impacted manu- facturing processes and systems and origi- nated new applications and products. For more detailed information on
all the awards listed here contact the Machines Italia division of the Italian Trade Agency. Your respective country’s offices are located on the back cover of this publication.
