PROVIDING A SAFE PLACE TO STUDY A

new state of the art study and learning centre at the University of Manchester, the Alan Gilbert Learning

Commons, is using Prysmian’s Afumex LSX low smoke zero halogen cable. The Afumex LSX range was developed to address the

specific needs of modern building services. For small power and lighting circuits, Afumex LSX has many applications, including cables installed in thin walls and partitions. Afumex LSX can be used where traditionally a bulkier

armoured cable would have been installed indoors. This brings about considerable cost savings for the project. The cable’s dressable construction offers a combination of rigidity and ease of bending, which keeps its shape during installation.

The Alan Gilbert Learning Commons is the central hub

of the university’s Oxford Road campus - connecting both the library and administrative departments. It was designed to give students a focal point for learning boasting some 1,000 flexible study spaces. www.prysmian.com

Exciting news for electricians in the West Country

a major breakthrough in training provision for the electrical sector. DCET Training is now an official

NICEIC has teamed up with south west-based DCET Training to deliver

training partner with NICEIC meaning electrical contractors in the region no longer need to travel up to training centres in Chesterfield, Darlington or Dunstable to obtain NICEIC accredited training. Instead, quality NICEIC accredited training is available at DCET centres in Exeter, Plymouth and Redruth. All NICEIC approved courses will

be available from DCET including updates on 17th Edition, PAT training, installation and maintenance of heat pumps, electric vehicle charging, fire alarms and many more. Bernard Collins of DCET said,

“This partnership will deliver great benefits to contractors in the south west region - ensuring they receive the most up to date and relevant courses developed and delivered by leading industry experts. www.niceic.com

VIDEO GUIDANCE

Head of technical services at the Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA), Giuliano Digilio, has discussed the consultation on Amendment No 3 of BS7671 of the IET Wiring Regulations in a new video news update. Digilio highlighted the association’s work to ensure that the amendment addresses issues with the current regulations - including the use of RCDs, better definitions and revised inspection schedules. Flexicon has supplied Fläkt Woods, an industrial fan manufacturer, with high specification cable protection for the installation of powerful ventilation fans for the ‘project of the century’, the first sea tunnel between two continents. Fläkt Woods was selected to provide specialist fans for the Marmaray tunnel rail project in Turkey, which links the European and Asian shores of Istanbul - passing underneath the Bosporous Strait. The scheme has been noted as the world’s biggest transportation infrastructure build, spanning 13.6km. Supplying three high

specification flexible conduit systems, Flexicon was able to meet Fläkt Woods’ understandably demanding requirements. Fläkt Woods designed the fans to

operate at up to 300°C for up to two hours, which enabled EN 12101-3 certification. This would allow evacuation during a fire that would remain clear long enough for all

personnel to exit safely. During such an incident it is vital to protect the supply cabling to keep the fans running. Flexicon’s low fire hazard (LFHU) conduit was selected to protect the fans’ power cables against the potential high temperatures. The flexible conduit within the

fans also needed to provide protection in hazardous areas. Flexicon’s LTP conduit system, with EXD barrier glands were able to meet the ATEX and IEC Ex approvals needed to provide the highest level of protection within potentially explosive environments. Flexicon has also supplied nylon corrugated flexible conduit with FPA fittings, which were used on the ‘low temperature’ installations. www.flexicon.uk.com
