A

s you may have noticed we have a slightly new look to

Electrical Engineering this month. As I mentioned in my previous column we have, for some time, been in the process of redesigning the look and feel of all the magazines in the Connecting Industry portfolio, and it’s with great excitement that we are rolling-out the new-look style in the March issues. Although we’ve been busy

working on the new designs, the content of our March issue is just as insightful as always - containing all the usual engaging features, case studies and latest product news. We’ll also be looking ahead to the biannual Drives & Controls show taking place at the Birmingham NEC on 8th-10th April (page 38) as well as the Sustainability Live exhibition, also at the NEC, on 1st-3rd April (page 22). Also this month Steve Bratt

from the Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA), provides his latest column for Electrical Engineering in which he looks at the main drivers in the recovery of the UK economy and how this can best be sustained (page 33).

zones, each identified with its own diverse concept and style - with 330 shops, an inside rollercoaster, a green roof, a 30 hall cinema complex with 4D Cinema, a covered ice rink, a fitness centre, several supermarkets and extensively, underground parking. Such a sophisticated complex demands a life safety

CONDUCTORS OF MANY COLOURS

Nexans is deploying its coloured conductors on the new 420kV Ørskog– Sogndal overhead transmission link connecting mid-Norway to western Norway. The new conductors will feature a

special grey-green surface treatment that enables them to blend into the pine forest background on the most environmentally sensitive parts of the route. The Ørskog-Sogndal link will provide extra

transmission capacity for mid-Norway, where there is a current energy deficit of some 7TWh - equivalent to the annual consumption of 400,000 single family homes. The new link will also facilitate the grid connection of around 100 small hydropower schemes. Nexans will supply a total of 68km of its new

coloured conductors for installation on selected parts of the route. The treatment process enables any design of conductor to be produced in virtually any colour. www.nexans.com

integrators, Sectron, designed and installed a system around 150 Kentec Syncro AS analogue addressable control panels. The system is supported by Hochiki ESP protocol fire data communications with over 3,700 Hochiki devices, including intelligent smoke/heat sensors, call points and microprocessor controlled modules. www.kentec.co.uk

Attracting attention

Critical power specialist Powertecnique recently invited over a dozen interested companies to take a tour of its new DataShelter - a containerised critical power and data centre solution which has been customised to the needs of the MoD. Darren Pearce, MD at Powertecnique explained,

“Visitors were impressed with DataShelter, commenting that unlike the standard boxed-up versions of data centres they see, it was clear that we’ve taken the time to engineer this solution to custom-build a containerised unit. “You can see exactly how our engineers have

utilised the space to accommodate specialist cooling equipment, as well as a wealth of interesting features in the customisation. We were highly praised by the MoD for this solution and were told that this is exactly what a data centre is supposed to look like, delivered within the customer’s timeframe.” www.powertecnique.com
