Miniature machines and nanotechnology are both featured in this issue. MEMS, or micro- electro-mechanical systems, is now a huge area of research – nanotechnology, likewise – which relies heavily on aspects of photonics and optical technologies, demonstrated by the inclusion of MEMS as one of the main conference themes at the recent Photonics West show. Jessica Rowbury on page 20 explores two such MEMS devices that take the relatively complex optics of confocal microscopy and shrink them to a device that can fit inside the tip of an endoscope for cancer diagnosis – the scanning mirror is less than a millimetre in size. On an even smaller scale, the article on page 38 looks at the potential for carrying out nanosurgery on individual cells, a topic also discussed in a keynote presentation at Photonics West. The show in San Francisco drew a record 21,360 attendees, with 1,256 companies exhibiting and more than 4,700 technical presentations. In fact, according to Stephen Anderson, SPIE’s industry and marketing strategist, 18 per cent of the world’s photonics business was exhibiting at the show – equating to $84 billion combined turnover for 2012. The news section beginning on page 4 has more news from the conference.

Additive manufacturing (page 16) and cooling technologies (page 26) are both also featured in this issue. Certain markets within photonics are doing better than others, but if Photonics West is anything to go by, there’s plenty of optimism surrounding the industry as a whole.
