EOS NEWS D

uring a meeting on 18 February in Tokyo, EOS and the Japanese Society of Applied Physics (JSAP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding

(MoU). Present were Professor M. Konagai, president of JSAP, Professor Paul Urbach, president of EOS, and Dr M. Watanabe, president of the Optical Design Group (ODG), which is affiliated with the JSAP

. Also at the

meeting were: Professor Michael Pfeffer, secretary of the EOS Board, Wilhelm Ulrich, chairman of the EOS Industrial Advisory Board, and Dr Kimio Tatsuno, EOS liaison officer for Asia. The meeting was held in parallel with the International Conference on Optics-photonics Design and Fabrication (ODF14) in Itabashi, Tokyo.

According to the MoU, members of the EOS who are not members of JSAP

, can submit

papers to JSAP meetings under the same terms, and can attend conferences organised by JSAP at the same rate as JSAP members. Conversely, the same applies to members of JSAP for EOS meetings and conferences.

Memorandum of Understanding signed between EOS and JSAP

The two societies are considering holding joint events in Europe and Japan The societies will consider organising joint

events in Europe and Japan. An interesting example is the ODF conference, which is organised once every two years by the ODG. It has become tradition that once every four years the ODF is held in a country outside of Japan. In 2012 the ODF was held in St. Petersburg and was co-organised by the D.S. Rozhdestvensky

EOS Annual Meeting 2014

The preparations for the EOS Annual Meeting 2014 are in full progress. The EOSAM2014 will be held from 16 to 19 September in Adlershof, Berlin. The conference will be opened by the Head of the Photonics Unit of the European Commission, who will give a presentation about the opportunities for photonics and optics research within Horizon2020.

The scope of EOSAM2014 will be quite broad, with topics ranging from adaptive and active optics, bio- and medical optics, advanced metrology, organic opto- electronics, optical design and toleranceing, silicon photonics, fibre optics, metamaterials,

plasmonics and photonic crystals. Appropriately for Berlin, which is well known for its cinema, there will be a session on ‘optics for cinematography and video’ with a special event on the evening of 19 September. It has become a tradition in EOSAM to organise a session called Grand Challenges in Photonics. This session has been very successful in past EOSAM conferences, and this time the session will feature excellent invited speakers, namely: Tobias Kippenberg, who will talk about the mechanical properties of light; Ferenc Krausz, who will lecture on attosecond optics; and also

Optical Society, a Russian optical society affiliated with EOS. This year the ODF was held in Tokyo, but in 2016 it will return to Europe, namely to Weingarten at Lake Konstanz in Germany. This might be a good opportunity to hold a joint JSAP and EOS conference. The MoU began on 1 January 2014 and will be valid for three years.

Adlershof

a presentation from Aristide Dogariu from the College of Optics and Photonics at the University of Central Florida. Last but not least, for the

first time in an EOSAM, lectures related to the main conference

topics, will be given for students on the day before the start of the show. I hope to see many of you at this interesting event!

Paul Urbach, President of the EOS.
