Project updates


I’ve been making some more progress on the Luscombe laser-cut kit from National Balsa www.nationalbalsa.com based on the Wendell Hostetler plans www.hostetlers

plans.com. The fuselage is now covered with 1⁄8 balsa sheeting. I wet the wood with Windex in sections and wrapped with ace bandages to dry. I then cut the formed wood to size and glued it in place. I used a combi- nation of Bob Smith’s MAXI-CURE Extra Thick CA www.bsi-inc.com on the bottom surfaces and wood workers glue on the seams and edges. This seems to have been the best tradeoff between speed and sanding ease. The BSI MAXI-CURE CA gives a few extra seconds to align and fit each strip which made life much easier and the results better. Since I am planning on a 12S power sys-


tem a separate receiver power supply will be required. I like to keep things as simple as possible so I chose Hitec HS-8360TH high voltage coreless servos along with their heavy duty twisted wire extensions, www.hitecrcd. com. This will allow use of a 2S Li-Po plugged directly into the receiver with no UBEC needed. Hitec offers high voltage servos in many sizes and types to meet your needs.


You may remember my writing about helping out at last year’s Nats electric pylon races. Well, seeing all those e-powered rac- ers had me wondering if I could handle one. I contacted AirBorne Models www.airborne- models.com for their EF1 legal Outrageous pylon racer designed by Jerry Smith and Dan Kane. The Outrageous features a carbon wing join- er, detachable battery hatch, aluminum land- ing gear, painted cowling and predrilled motor mount. The model was well packaged with all components arriving in perfect condition. The quality of the Outrageous kit looked good throughout. A NMPRA approved power sys- tem and 4-channel airborne system are re- quired. Airborne Models carries many scale and sport wood built-up ARF models along with many accessories. I will have the Outrageous ready for next time. ’Til then, fly safely.
