Whereas data and technology has often been seen by management as the answer to fleet optimisation, there has always been a disconnect between the reality of operating units on the quarry face and interpreting the data.


It is therefore not just about fleet management, it is more about a site optimisation process. This is a six stage process starting with engagement, then listening to the site specific challenges. Only then do we look to design a solution, which is then aligned to the business needs, deployed and executed.


The recent multi-million pound deal with Hope Construction Materials is the first example of this process in action. To understand how the business could achieve its goals of maximising efficiency, while creating a flexible and fuel-efficient fleet, Finning developed a bespoke solution that optimised its productivity at the right price.


DESIGN


Hope Construction Materials’ decision to bring the management of its fleet in-house, made it very important to have a clear strategy to meet the needs of the business.


The first step was to engage with the teams and listen to their needs, designing a process for Hope’s individual quarrying sites. By analysing everything from haul roads to the environment, fleet operation, fixed and mobile plant interaction, maintenance and the future vision for the sites, we were able to align a fleet plan to meet the needs of the whole business.


This allowed us to schedule the deployment of the new fleet, executing the overall site optimisation programme.


With the support of Cat Financial we used the data to make sure the deal and price met Hope’s requirements. This in-turn allowed us to schedule a deployment strategy to meet the requirements of the whole business
