IF EMPLOYEES were asked to describe their L&D department, not all of the responses might be polite but it would be surprising if adjectives like aggressive turned up. Well, maybe it is time for L&D to get pushy. The L&D department of one large global has. It has decided to strip out all the nice-to-have courses and concentrate on the core. Those essentials are being delivered by the most effective means possible with a significant emphasis on technology-based learning. Savings should be in the tens of millions of dollars. Its L&D is not saying no to other learning; it has simply decided that, on reflection, there are cheaper and better ways of getting to the same result – if not better – for some peripheral learning. Organisations are beginning to realise that the way employees use technology when they are away from the office is likely to be a lot smarter than how they are allowed to use it while at work. At the recent Learning Technologies conference one speaker made a similar point as the large global: if he wants to do a bit of DIY in the spring he doesn’t wait to the summer before going on a course so he can put up the shelves in the autumn. Instead, he asks his search engine or video sharing platform the question and takes it as read that he’ll get an instant, relevant and usable answer. L&D needs to allow employees to deploy all available means and channels. Facilitating, engaging, curating –

whatever term you like, L&D has to re-engineer its approach to how it helps people learn. Get pushy, not pushed out. Peter Williams Editor
