What do you remember about 2006? The year kicked off with a whale swimming up the Thames, the seven-tonne northern bottle nose’s journey ended as it died from multiple causes despite the best efforts of it would be-rescuers. The Awards 2006-style


National Assembly for Wales was opened. Closures included Peugeot’s decision to shut a 60-year-old car factory at Ryton near Coventry and the BBC announced that Grandstand would be off air after nearly 50 years. Debuts in the year included Daniel Craig who starred as James Bond in Casino Royale. Alexander Litvinenko died in London poisoned by polonium-210. The Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change was published by the British government and weeks later a tornado hit London, causing several injuries and £10m worth of damage.


Second time out the Awards had grown modestly from 10 categories to 11. Of the 11 awards, eight were technical and three focused on personality. The awards have always been prepared to adapt and innovate to reflect the changing priorities and concerns within the market and the industry. And 2006 embraced this trend: in this year there were two ‘innovative’ categories – there had only been one in 2005 and the introduction of the ‘Excellence in the production of learning content’ now a mainstay of the awards split into various groups. The personality awards survived intact from year one.
