Thus, thermal stability, the absence of contamination of the material through handling, the cleanliness of the mould and the machine, avoidance of pollution that (in some cases) may be the same size as the piece to be manufactured or sufficiently aggressive as to damage the mould during the micro injection process, etc. are parameters that should be closely monitored while one should forget the idea that what is good in a standard workshop injection is valid for micro injections.


Naturally, controlling the environment means some extra costs of which the end customer is unaware, but should they not be considered, they will appear in the form of non-compliance, lack of durability of the mould and, ultimately, in product failure. The added value of micro injection, to a great extent, lies in the indirect environmental costs and the conditions in which it takes place.


Control


Once the micro injected piece has been obtained, the next challenge appears: checking and overseeing the piece that, as with other standard processes, should be examined from two angles. Firstly, the innate quality of the piece must be ensured; secondly, the controlled characteristics must be linked to process stability.


As the pieces are so small, the typical dimension measurement methods cannot be applied as the measuring tool is either too large to be used on the piece or the piece registers defects or


displacement which fudges the measurements. In most cases, non- contact methods are used, whether they are optical, digital or 3D scanners — like the tomography technology used in metrology.
