Updates from MOAA
At the council and chapter round-table discussion, Col. Barry Wright, USA (Ret), director of MOAA’s Council and Chapter Affairs Department, spoke with attendees about the state of the council and chapter system and highlighted current and upcoming national MOAA initiatives. One such initiative is the chapter-recruiting program. With Chapter Recruiting 2013 nearing its end, Wright deemed the program a success. As of the meeting, he said, 1,565 new chapter members were recruited into the council and chapter system through the Chapter Recruiting 2013 program.
Through face-to-face meetings chapter members can build relationships with their congressional representatives on behalf of national MOAA.

Looking to the future of the recruiting program, Wright announced some refinements to the Chapter Recruiting 2014 incentive program that could allow more chapters to qualify for monetary incentives. Despite these changes, the focus of the program remains recruiting new chapter members to keep MOAA’s council and chapter system strong.
Col. Mike Hayden, USAF (Ret), director of MOAA’s Government Relations Department, noted another important initiative, to establish a chapter presence in each of the country’s 435 congressional districts to make the most of chapters’ grassroots advocacy capabilities. Through face-to-face meetings, chapter members can build relationships with their congressional representatives on behalf of national MOAA and have an impact on the association’s legislative goals at the local and state levels.
Discussion time
During the open discussion, council and chapter members highlighted success stories and exchanged best practices. Maj. Jim Cunningham, USA (Ret), Alamo Chapter president, shared how his chapter recruits new members for national MOAA when they join the chapter.
“When we recruit a new member, we ask whether they’re a national member,” Cunningham said. Chapter leaders encourage those who aren’t to sign up for a Basic or Premium membership in MOAA.
Lt. Col. Edward Wallington, USA (Ret), Golden Triangle (Miss.) Chapter president, said his chapter focuses on recruiting newly commissioned officers. Though these members tend to move often during their careers, they’ll eventually “need a home to go back to,” Wallington said, and he hoped they would find that with the Golden Triangle Chapter.
Leaders also were invited to attend the Annual Meeting of the Membership, a chairman’s luncheon, a breakfast with members of the Colorado congressional delegation, and the Community Heroes Award Night.
