Uniting Leaders
During the 2013 annual meeting in Colorado Springs, Colo., MOAA recognized top-notch councils and chapters and leaders worked together to secure a successful chapter system.
This month, we are highlighting in this department’s main story, “Rewarding Hard Work,” some of the events from MOAA’s 2013 annual meeting and Levels of Excellence Award dinner. By all accounts, and I think the photographs (facing page) support this observation, MOAA staff and leaders shared a lot of great information. For many of our members, the annual meeting is a chance to travel and see former colleagues and friends from across the country, almost like a family reunion.

MOAA’s staff members always learn from chapter leaders by listening and gleaning good ideas and best practices — and this meeting was no exception. It was a busy two days of chapter events, but we also had many opportunities to have fun.

I’d like to acknowledge the great support we received from our staff, especially my deputy director, Col. Brian Anderson, USAF (Ret), and members of the Pikes Peak (Colo.) Chapter and the Colorado Council of Chapters. They were instrumental during the preparation and the execution of these events. It’s our chapter members — MOAA’s community ambassadors — who made it all come together at the local level.

One highlight for me was the chapter round-table discussion, which allowed us to present and discuss the chapter-recruiting program, recapping the 2013 program and looking ahead to the refinements under consideration as we prepared to roll out Chapter Recruiting 2014. We received invaluable feedback that helped us re-focus our efforts to provide tools that support chapters and councils.

One tool discussed (that since has gone live) is a new online chapter membership dues join and renewal site. This allows individuals to join a chapter, renew their chapter memberships, and pay annual chapter dues online. Learn more at www.moaa.org/onlinechapterdues.

The Levels of Excellence Award dinner is well-deserved recognition for all the great work our chapter and council leaders do in their home communities. Another annual event, the Community Heroes Award Night, is always inspiring, as MOAA recognizes so many individuals and groups who go above and beyond to support our servicemembers and their families.

But, selfishly for me, the best part of the annual meeting is having the opportunity to visit with (albeit briefly) and see so many friends. If you didn’t make it to Colorado Springs in 2013, we hope to see and hear from you at the 2014 annual meeting, to be held Oct. 27-28 at the Sheraton Pentagon City in Arlington, Va. I hope to see you soon at a chapter meeting.

Rewarding Hard Work
Leaders are recognized for supporting MOAA’s mission.
MOAA council and chapter leaders and their spouses gathered Nov. 14-16, 2013, at the Antlers Hilton in Colorado Springs, Colo., for the association’s annual meeting. During several events, MOAA staff recognized its top affiliates, updated attendees about ongoing and upcoming association initiatives, and collaborated with leaders to ensure future success of the council and chapter system.

At the Levels of Excellence Award dinner, MOAA acknowledged councils and chapters that regularly support of the association’s mission and legislative goals, their chapter members, and their local communities.
