Continued downward pressure on costs, combined with fierce competition amongst cell and module manufacturers remain the dominant issues in the PV sector. The panel will discuss the impact of these factors on the sector, as well as considering opportunities for expansion into new markets across Africa and the MENA region, and Latin America.

Energy and Society Sustainable Transportation 14.45-15.30

Efficient transportation networks drive economic growth and transportation has a key role to play in a sustainable future. With transport contributing 14% of global greenhouse gas emissions, it is vital that safe, affordable and sustainable policies and

infrastructure are developed. This session takes a look at the systems, policies and local initiatives in place that are helping deliver a sustainable urban environment.

Wednesday 22 January Fostering Innovation

Inspiring a Generation, Stimulating Growth 09.30-10.15

Global energy demands are rising, bringing energy security, supply and sustainability to the top of the world agenda. Stimulating innovation in energy technologies is going to be key in overcoming today’s energy challenges and anticipating our future ones. But how can innovation be encouraged and harnessed? How can we inspire the next generation?

Bioenergy, Biomass and Biofuels 11.30-12.15

Biomass is a versatile energy source with a big role to play in a sustainable energy future, as it is the only renewable that can be substituted for fossil fuels in all energy markets, including transportation. However, increasing deployment of sustainable forms of bioenergy is not without its challenges. Competition for land for food is particularly controversial and must be carefully managed, especially in developing countries, whilst the numerous types of biomass feedstocks and processing routes make it difficult to build a cohesive industry.

The Gas Revolution Fuelling the Future? 14.30-15.30

Over the past year, gas, specifically unconventional natural gas, has muscled its way up the energy agenda. With countries placing greater emphasis on energy security and supply, natural gas has transformed the energy landscape. Vast, new resources are being tapped into, driving down the cost of supply. But what is the environmental cost of this dash to gas, and can it play a role reducing carbon emissions? Will the exploitation of natural gas resources ever sit harmoniously with renewables?
