Haunted Attraction Magazine: What is your background (training, education)?

ANATHEMA: I was self taught in film photography and when I made the change to digital about 5 – 6 years ago I went to VanArts for the digital photography program.

HAM: Did you actually start by photographing the mundane? ANATHEMA: I photographed everything and anything so I could learn different aspects of the field, but I enjoyed setting up scenes and using my sister as a character.

HAM: What started your fascination with horror themes? Being terrified all of the time when I was younger forced me to face my fears and I began seeing the incredible beauty on the “dark side”.

ANATHEMA: What inspires your themes? My inspirations come from a feelings lurking in the corners of my brain, as well as childhood nightmares.

HAM: Many find your photographs extremely disturbing, Is this the intent? ANATHEMA: Actually it is not my intent, and once and awhile I’ll step back and think, wow, this is kind of twisted. I enjoy when people can look past the initial “shock” and see that there is a story behind every image.

HAM: What do you find disturbing? ANATHEMA: The mall. The dead drone look in everyones’ eyes as they consume needless products.

HAM: Take us through one of your shoots. I like to chose a concept that has some meaning to the person I am shooting because it will show through in the final image. Then I storyboard how I want the setup. Lists of props/wardrobe, supplies and people involved is made. I then find and/or create what is needed. Most of my shoots are on location, so finding a place can be tricky sometimes. Day of I get there early and usually have an assistant to help set up the scene; once the subject has arrived, paperwork is signed and the make- up/hair is done by either myself or a makeup artist.

oversee everything to ensure that it is following my vi- sion. Actual shoot time is quite short due to the amount of planning and set up. Then I do post production that can sometimes take days depending on the concept.

HAM: Where do you draw the line? ANATHEMA: Bestiality and paedophilia. If I’m ever us-

I
