Mission: Transition
Career Moves
January can be a wonderful month to reflect on your proudest achievements from the past year. It’s also a good time to assess your potential for growth. If you’re in a position where you can’t grow through more responsibility or technical knowledge, think about a change. Additional situations that might merit a career change include: a cultural mismatch with your employer; changes in your work–life balance; an impending merger or post-merger trauma; unmet expectations; a dearth of friendships at work; or ethical conflicts.

Another factor to consider is time. A résumé that reads like a rock group’s world tour will make some hiring managers nervous. Still, decision-makers are more concerned with your accomplishments and reasons for moving on. An 18-month post easily can span two calendar years on your résumé and allay job-hopping concerns.

Once you’re ready to make a move, MOAA can help*. We offer a team of experienced career consultants, financial planners, health care transition experts, video interview preparation technology, transition seminars for new graduates and senior officers, and a new veterans service officer program to assist with disability claims.

A successful job search will take you outside of your comfort zone and stretch you professionally. The potential benefits are huge, and the hardest part might be taking the first step.

Practice for the Big Game
What’s the best way to prepare for an interview? Practice. “Every interview is the Super Bowl,” says Capt. Jim Carman, USN (Ret), director of MOAA’s Transition Center. “And if every interview is the Super Bowl, then you should spend no less than eight hours preparing for one.” MOAA’s Interview Practice tool

is designed to allow Premium and Life members and spouses to practice and answer interview questions via webcam and then watch and critique these videos, with or without the help of career consultants. Self or assisted critiques provide necessary feedback to help you tailor your appearance.
