52 | PROMOTION | ELEMENTARY The virtues of visualisers

Just as interactive whiteboards revolutionised our classrooms ten years ago, visualisers are set to change the way children learn over the next decade

f you're looking to get ICT embedded across the school without spending a fortune then visualisers (sometimes called document cameras) are for you. If you think you already have visualisers but they aren't being used much, then you probably have cheap webcams – definitely not the same thing!

Visualisers enhance teaching right across the curriculum – but more than that, they support key educational strategies. Here are a few examples of how visualisers are already improving teaching and learning:

✥ Promote inclusion in the classroom. A visualiser is a fantastic tool for

Elementary, my dear teacher

Elementary are experts on visualiser solutions and can offer demonstrations free of charge, in your school to a time of your convenience. involving the whole class and creating child-centric lessons without having pupils crowding round to see the subject mater. You’ll soon realise that you can involve and engage pupils more with the technology.

✥ Support peer- and self-assessments. Work can be shown to the whole class, annotations and highlights made without spoiling the original, different work compared. All without the need for expensive and time-consuming photocopying.

✥ Accommodate self-paced learning. Visualisers are ideal for demonstrating techniques. Perform the demonstration while videoing it and leave running in a loop. The quicker students can learn from the video, leaving the teacher free to spend time with those who need more support.

✥ Share good practice across the school. Lesson resources can be saved and shared on your VLE or used for modelling or web sharing. Create an e-portfolio of children’s work easily.

✥ Address different learning styles in one lesson – visual, auditory and kinaesthetic. For example, show a fossil with the visualiser. Zoom in on the fine detail and freeze the image. Now, when you remove the fossil, the image remains. You can discuss the image with the class, while the fossil is handed around the students.

✥ Save time and money. No more photocopying is needed; lesson preparation time is reduced; expensive or tricky experiments can be conducted once, recorded and shown again and again.

From your initial research to making a buying decision or upgrading to more contemporary models, it's crucial to be well-informed. This allows you to buy with confidence for your school and make a lasting impact on your pupils' learning outcomes. Rather than obsessing over technical features, it's important to see and use a visualiser to grasp its multiple functions and diverse utility. ET
