Supercomputer launched at The University of S


The University of Southampton has flicked the on-switch for the most powerful university based supercomputer in England, and the third largest academic supercomputing facility in the UK. Iridis4 will also enter the top 10 of the


UK’s elite supercomputers. Dr Oz Parchment, director of


research computing at the University, said: "Southampton is a leader in High Performance Computing (HPC) and Iridis4 allows us to take another leap forward to keep pace with the needs of our world-class researchers. "There is an ever-increasing demand

GOOGLE APPS CONFIRM HIGHER EDUCATION FRAMEWORK


Janet, part of the Jisc group, has agreed a major framework with Google Apps for Education. The agreement will make it easier


for colleges and universities to make the move into education technology with Google Apps for Education, and open up the free online collaboration and communication benefits it offers to


more staff and students. The framework agreement will


mean that colleges and universities in the UK are now eligible to sign up to Google Apps for Education using a contract approved by Janet, as meeting UK legal requirements. Speaking to a number of

Students satisfied with MOOCs


A survey has revealed a 91% satisfaction rate in the massive open online courses (MOOCs) offered by the University of London International Programmes. The majority of respondents rated their


experience as 'good', 'very good' or 'excellent'. The four free online courses offered,


which began in June this year, are: Creative Programming for Digital Media & Mobile Apps; English Common Law: Structure and Principles; Malicious Software and its Underground Economy: Two Sides to Every Story; and The Camera Never Lies. An impressive 210,000 students signed


up to the courses from countries all over the world, including the United States, India, Brazil, Spain and Canada among many others. The MOOCs took the format of


90,000 of them went on to participate in the courses as 'active' students, with 8,843 completing a course in full, to receive a Statement of Accomplishment. Due to the success of the initiative,


video lectures, assessments based on automatically graded multiple choice questions or peer reviews, and forums allowing the students to interact with the content, each other and course teams. Twiter chats and live video sessions were also used as part of the English Common Law MOOC. Of the 210,000 total registered students,


plans are in place to complement the International Programmes' existing MOOC offering. Mike Kerrison, director of academic development for the University of London International Programmes, explained: "Our experience of offering four University of London International Programmes MOOCs through Coursera has proved to be a collaborative, exciting and positive experience for all involved. We look forward to continuing to deliver more high-quality online courses to an even larger global audience of learners in the future."
