Orion Preferred Scoring System for Junior Olympic Qualifi cation

Starting with the 2013-2014

Junior Olympic Rifl e and Pistol Championships, USA Shooting is giving a strong preference to selecting qualifying match loca- tions that use electronic scor- ing. Electronic scoring includes systems like Sius-Ascor, Mega- Link, Meyton, or Orion. We made this decision in an effort to have comparable and consistent scor- ing throughout the country. It’s a way to help ensure all shooters are treated equally. One of the reasons we were able to make this decision is because of Ori- on’s now widespread use and availability. Orion works by digitally scor-

ing paper targets using com- modity scanners and a Win- dows based software program. Orion is as accurate as any other electronic scoring system, it’s affordable, and provides many advantages to match directors and team leaders. Orion comes with a complete match manage- ment system. It supports and is approved for all USA Shoot- ing courses of fi re for 10m air rifl e, 10m air pistol, 50ft rifl e, and 50m rifl e. Its result system automatically breaks individual and team ties, including the new

decimal scoring standard. Orion can even upload your competi- tion results to the Internet. Orion took a different ap-

proach in using paper targets. Once fi red, the targets are digi- tized using commercial scan- ners. The Orion software reads the resulting image fi le and scores each shot using an image processing algorithm. By relying on a software solution with com- modity scanners, Orion achieves the same level of scoring accu- racy but at an affordable price point for local clubs and teams.

Orion’s Result Center A most valuable aspect of

Orion is the online result ser- vice, called the Result Center (orionresults.com). With Orion, any match can have a presence on the Internet. When enabled, Orion will automatically upload results after a target is scanned and scored. Spectators and ath- letes alike can view the results online. The need to have timely online results cannot be under- stated.

Using Orion in a Sanc- tioned Event There are a few important

steps to follow to use Orion at your competition. *Specify that Orion will be listed in the match bulletin. *All targets must be scored

with Orion. The use of a plug or other manual methods of scoring is prohibited in conjunction with Orion.

*Competitors should be

made aware that there is a two- point penalty for lost protests (USAS rule 6.13.4.5.1). *Scores must be reported to

USAS after the match. This can easily be done online via Rail- Station, USA Shooting’s data- base management system. *Make sure you know how to

use Orion before the day of your match. This will ensure your com- petition runs effi ciently. Orion recommends running practice matches before your sanctioned event.

Online Training Courses Available

USA Shooting is developing

online basic training courses for all Olympic shooting events. These are basic how to get

started online courses. We get a lot of calls about how to get started, but there is nothing in the marketplace on how to get started in Olympic style shooting sports with the exception of rifl e. The fi rst online pistol course

is the Men’s Rapid Fire Pistol basic training course. A link to this course can be found on the lower-left corner of usashooting. org.
