Developments in passive components provide solutions for PSU design

a 30% smaller mounting surface than conventional 1210 size products, also providing improved design flexibility over comparable products, such as aluminium electrolytic capacitors.

inductors While the development of switching technology for power supplies originally provided the means to eliminate heavy and bulky mains transformers, these designs still required high value inductors. The further development of dedicated ICs for DC-DC converters has since led to distributed power supply solutions with voltages being stepped up or down as required at the point of load (POL). A new range of high power inductors from TDK EPCOS is aimed squarely at DC-DC converters in automotive electronics and SMPS for demanding industrial electronics applications. Components in the improved and highly reliable B82476B1*M100 series of surface-mount power inductors offers 10 per cent higher current capability than existing types and are designed for rated currents between 0.33A and 7.5A. Inductance values for the series ranges from 1.0μH to 1000μH, and typical DC resistance is between 6.0mΩ and 1.95mΩ. Qualified to AEC-Q200, the new power inductors are suitable for operating temperatures from –55 to +150°

C and thus

fulfil the rigorous requirements for automotive electronics applications. Designed with a base plate, the unshielded components also offer high mechanical stability. Offering a footprint of 12.95 x 9.40mm and an insertion height of 5.08mm, the components are RoHS-compatible and suitable for lead-free soldering to JEDEC J-STD-020D.

deliver up to a huge 500W power capability. The planar transformers measure from 21.6 x 23.4 x 8.6mm up to

26.7 x 29.5 x 11.9mm and are a pin-compatible replacement to existing Pulse multilayer PCB-based planar transformers. Traditional multilayer PCB windings with up to eight consecutive winding layers can give rise to high leakage inductance, producing unacceptably high voltage spikes and snubber circuit losses. However, replacing the multilayer PCB with a reduced number of flat coil winding layers connected in series provides immediate benefits by reducing the AC proximity effect on copper losses, also significantly reducing cost. In addition, more winding segments and selective coupling between simultaneously conducting windings can be implemented to reduce the leakage inductance. This improved interleaving capability can increase the PSU efficiency in high power systems by 2%, which is certainly not negligible. In addition to the manufacturers featured above, Avnet Abacus is a

fully franchised distributor across Europe for many manufacturers that offer passive components for power applications, including: Bourns, Cooper Bussmann, Dubilier, Murata, NIC, Nichicon, Rubycon, Samsung, Schaffner, TE Connectivity, Toko, Vitrohm & Yageo.

yet demanding low-profile components, such as in high-efficiency bus converters for distributed power architectures, system boards in datacommunications equipment, in addition to industrial controls and robotics applications, a new series of low-loss flat-coil surface-mount planar transformers from Pulse Electronics delivers high-efficiency power handling while also meeting tight height constraints. The technology employed in this new standard series uses a copper fill factor that is twice that of a PCB, so the direct current resistance (DCR) of the primary winding is reduced by 50% and the power rating is increased by 20% to
