CATAWBA RIVER, NORTH CAROLINA STEWART VENABLE

After losing too many bass lures to toothy gar, Stewart was ready for revenge. “We loaded up with heavy line and big lures and hit the water,” he says. They found the gar stacked up and hungry. Stewart says, “In the end we got our fish pictures, kept all our fingers and earned a newfound respect for an awesome game fish!” Read more about catching gar from a kayak at www.rapidmedia.com/0101.

ROBERT WONG YUEN KONA, HAWAII

Robert scored this wahoo for Aquahunter’s annual Makahiki tournament. Hundreds of anglers enter the tournament and winning is the highest honor among the island’s kayak anglers. “I’m very happy to be a part of it,” Robert says.

CINNAMON ROSSMAN DOOR COUNTY, MICHIGAN

PUGET SOUND, WASHINGTON BRAD HOLE

“I could see several pink salmon porpoising at the surface,” Brad tells us. So, he trolled a 10.5-inch white flasher and pink hoochie squid through the busting fish. “My lead-core line bent as soon I passed the school,” he recalls. The trophy fish measured over 26 inches and weighed seven pounds.

This 17-pound trout fell for a silver plug trolled through Whitefish Bay. It took Cinnamon 45 minutes to land the fish. “It was her first time kayak fishing,” writes friend Joe Kaftan, “but she is hooked, now.”

FIL MARTINEZ HOBUK, WASHINGTON

Fil fished through the fog to catch this stringer full of

rockfish, cabezon and ling cod. “It was like I paddled out of reality to the mythical land of kayak fishing Valhalla.”

RICK EDWARDS FLAGLER BEACH, FLORIDA

Talk about beginner’s luck, this giant tarpon was Rick’s first fish in the kayak. The fish pulled him two miles offshore. “Then we had to paddle back to the beach through a terrible thunderstorm,” friend Larry Stephens tells us. Read the whole story and see more pictures of the catch at www.rapidmedia.com/0102.

JOSEPH GUGINO JOPPA FLATS, MAINE

Joseph sent this picture of his personal best striped bass— an 18-pounder that measured over 36 inches. “That morning I caught a bunch of short fish and this beauty!” he writes. The striper hit a Savage Sandeel and dragged Joseph up and down the flats.

LAKE WANAHOO, NEBRASKA RAF VARGAS

Raf was hitting the trees with an eight-inch worm on a Texas rig when he hooked this beauty. “It snowed here till May,” Raf says, “so I am fishing about every other day of the summer.”

SHENANDOAH RIVER, VIRGINIA HANK PLUNKERT

When Hank isn’t blasting big smallies with his dad, Jedediah Von Horror, he’s blasting tubers and swimmers with his water gun.

RACHEL ADRIEN TAMPA BAY, FLORIDA

Check out Rachel’s personal best snook. She caught the fish on a DOA Airhead just before a terrible storm and funnel cloud chased her off the water.

SCOTT RHULE TAMPA BAY, FLORIDA

I see spots! Scott caught this 19-inch redfish by working a bait along a line of mangroves. Scientists theorize that the spot on a red drum’s tail confuses predators and gives the redfish a chance to escape.

CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA JOANNE VAUGHN

This big red hit a live shrimp fished under a popping cork in shallow water. “Find the bite by fishing three rods, one with crab, one with mud minnow and one with a mullet,” Joanne suggests, “then switch to the bait that works best.”
