Great Adventures and Achievements of 2013

Paddle Canada members were involved in some ground-breaking trips, projects and events this season. We congratulate all of our enterprising and adventurous members on their successes. I have collected a few of these exciting stories to share with you.

SABLE ISLAND CROSSING

Jan-Sebastian La Pierre and Graham Carter successfully com- pleted a crossing from Canso, Nova Scotia to Sable Island in sea kayaks. The 170-kilometre stretch took 30 hours to cross the unforgiving North Atlantic. The paddlers described the trip as the most physically demanding challenge of their lives. The trip was conceived to raise $25,000 to send 25 kids living with chronic mental and physical illnesses to summer camps at Brigadoon Village. Learn more at www.paddle2sable.ca.

PADDLE TO THE OCEAN

Nova Scotian Zac Crouse’s film Paddle to the Ocean was nomi- nated for Digital Artist of the Year and the soundtrack was nominated for Folk Recording of The Year at the 2013 Nova Scotia Music Awards. Paddle to the Ocean is a documentary film and soundtrack about using a kayak, a bicycle and a banjo to recover from post-traumatic stress disorder. In 2011, Zac toured for his album You Plan To Do Nothing from Ottawa to Halifax using only a sea kayak and a bicycle. It was a jour- ney Zac had intended to do with his friend Corey, who sadly passed away during a kayaking adventure with Zac in Nova Scotia. Paddle To The Ocean is a tribute to Zac’s friend but it also demonstrates the healing power of music and outdoor recreation. Learn more at www.zaccrouse.com.

34th ANNUAL GULL RIVER RACE

PC Instructor Mark Scriver organized the 34th Annual Gull River Open Canoe Slalom Race in Minden, Ontario’s White- water Preserve. Twelve of the 19 podium placers were PC ca- noe instructors, including Andrew Westwood, Mark Scriver, Stef McArdle, Beth Kennedy, Paul Mason, Willa Mason, Paul Scriver, Kurtis Oman, Dave Humphreys, Gail Shields, Wendy Grater and Bella Waterton. It was very exciting to see so many youth and adult tandem teams. Congratulations to all the winners and Paddle Canada members who competed in the race!

ONTARIO SUP RACE SERIES

Standup paddleboarding had its own race action starting with the Ontario Summer Splash SUP Race Series organized by Henry Haiduk (PC SUP Instructor). With nine different races from May to September across Ontario, a total of 180 pad- dlers participated. “Event and participant numbers have been doubling each year since we started in 2011,” says Haiduk. He expects this trend to continue next year with offerings of more races on lakes and both gentle and advanced rivers. Learn more at: www.ontariosupseries.com.

ARCTIC CANOE COURSE

Fourteen youth and one adult received their Paddle Canada Waterfront Canoeing certificates in Kugluktuk, Nunavut, a hamlet located at the mouth of the Coppermine River. PC Canoe Instructors Cathy Alloolloo and Tiffany Ayalik of Narwhal Northern Adventures made the regional news by spreading awareness of youth paddling in the North. CBC North covered Narwhal Northern Adventure’s unique Float- ing Voyageur Canoe Dinner Theatre in Yellowknife. You can watch the video here: www.bit.ly/17Upz9p.
