2013 Legends of Paddling Award


BRUCE LESSELS


Bruce was a member of the U.S. Whitewater Team and won the bronze medal in C-1 at the 1987 World Whitewater Championships in France. He is an ACA certified canoe and kayak instructor and served for several years on the ACA: Safety Education and Instruction Council.

BEN MORTON


Ben spends most of his time traveling around the country to work for many different paddling schools as a guest instructor and guide, as well as to teach ACA Instructor Certification Workshops.


2013 Sanctioned Event of the Year Award


THE NORTH FORK CHAMPIONSHIP AND WHITEWATER FESTIVAL


The 2013 North Fork Championship and Whitewater Festival was sanctioned by the ACA. The North Fork Payette event has strong paddlers and the greater Boise area has long attracted and supported those most committed to an active outdoor lifestyle.

Tom is the Program


Manager for the Illinois Water TrailKeepers (IL WTK) Program, which is jointly sponsored by Openlands and the Illinois Paddling Council. Tom took over management of the IL WTK project about five years ago, and due to his efforts, the WTK program has expanded tremendously.

KELLY GOSSETT


In addition to running New Mexico Kayak Instruction, where hundreds of able bodied adults and children are taught kayaking each year, Kelly Gossett also founded Kayak New Mexico that teaches adaptive paddling to adults and children with autism spectrum disorders, healing veterans, and others with physical or developmental disabilities.

BEND PADDLE TRAIL ALLIANCE


The Bend Paddle Trail Alliance (BPTA) is an ACA Affiliated Club that is multi- faceted, including being a driving force behind the 2013 National Paddlesports Conference. BPTA recently established the Deschutes Paddle Trail, a navigable paddle trail within Deschutes County that has enhanced river and lake recreation and appreciation while promoting water safety, education and stewardship.

Virgil Chambers was the National Safe Boating Council’s first Executive Director. Under his leadership, the NSBC has tirelessly served the recreational boating community by elevating boating safety to new levels of professionalism and excellence.

Franziska Pokorny lives in Ilanz, a small town in a mountain valley in Graubünden, Switzerland. She has served as the Co- Chair of the ACA Europe Division and was on the planning committee for the 2013 Europe Paddlesports Conference in Zurich, Switzerland.
