Global market for packaged LEDs for lighting set to double

Amid falling prices and rising consumer acceptance, light-emitting diode (LED) technology is set to take over the lighting business, according to a new report entitled “Packaged LEDs – World – 2013” from IHS. Driven by a 96 percent increase in packaged LED revenue in the market from 2013 through to 2016 global revenue for packaged LEDs used in lighting applications is forecast to soar to $7.1 billion in 2016, up from $3.6 billion in 2013. The figure below presents the IHS forecast of revenue for packaged LEDs in lighting. A packaged LED is an LED die with a protective covering with contacts that enable it to be directly soldered to an electrical circuit.

Source: IHS October 2013 “As retail prices for LED lamps have fallen, it’s become more obvious that they are an attractive

alternative to conventional light bulbs, providing long-term savings in energy and replacement costs,” said Stewart Shinkwin, a market analyst, lighting and LEDs, for IHS. “Because of this, shipments of LED lamps for lighting are set to increase dramatically in the coming years, rising to 2.4 billion units in 2016, up from 520 million in 2013. The rapid expansion of the lighting market will come as a major boon to suppliers of packaged LEDs, which are seeking the next growth opportunity following the slowdown of the backlighting business.” In the past, rapid growth in the packaged LED market was driven by LCD display backlighting in applications such as mobile phones, notebooks and TVs. The majority of these applications have completed their transition to LED technology. Therefore, while LED demand for these products remains stable, annual unit growth largely is limited to single-digit percentages. The lighting market, however, is predicted to provide the next wave of explosive growth for packaged LEDs. In 2012, the lighting sector became the largest end application for the packaged LED market, having finally overtaken the TV backlighting market. Market saturation for LED backlighting has resulted in a number of leading suppliers shifting their focus and development resources toward the lighting industry. With LED lamp retail prices decreasing and more consumers realising the cost savings LED lamps

can provide over long periods of time, penetration of LEDs into the lighting market is set to increase significantly. Along with great opportunity, the projected growth in LED lamps will result in intensified competition among suppliers vying to capture market share. This competition will continue to further drive down prices.

LED lamp penetration is already significant in a number of lighting applications such as the retail and hospitality sectors, but it is the residential sector that IHS forecasts will provide the largest opportunity for packaged LEDs.

New range of half-pitch light-guides from MENTOR

Multitron is making available a new range of MENTOR miniature light- guides with radiating surfaces of 2mm diameter and a grid dimension of 2.54mm. Compared with conventional 5.08mm grid light-guides, these new miniaturised versions allow twice the number of display elements within the same physical width. This offers design engineers a whole new range of possibilities, particularly when space is restricted. These miniature modules are available in 150 standard variants including both horizontal and vertical radiating types, and single or multi- row modules. A number of different lengths are available as standard and special lengths can be provided at low MOQs due to clever tool inserts. Some versions are panel-mounted thus avoiding the need to drill holes in the PCB. Diffused and clear light-guide options are offered and customised, coloured modules are also available; these show the LED display colour when the LED is switched off. Despite their small radiating surface diameter of 2mm, with a relatively close side-by-side design, the miniature light-guides have been specially developed to prevent glare affecting neighbouring guide elements. This has been achieved by an in-house product creation process which starts with virtual development,

and continues via simulation and prototype manufacture, all the way through to the final production stage.

This new range of light-guides extends MENTOR’S multi-category portfolio by adding over 150 new miniature light-guides. In total, MENTOR offers 452 variations of standard light guides, 209 of which are immediately available from stock with low MOQs. Other product categories in which MENTOR excel include diverse opto components, capacitive keypads, knobs, handles and illuminated switching. Multitron is the sole UK & ROI agent for MENTOR GmbH, a leading manufacturer of opto and electronic components. Multitron is a new UK company formed with active support from MENTOR.
