Make it Viking s Get involved with the Festival of need here! 1

First, draw around the bowl to create a small circle in the centre of

the card. Then attach a pencil to the string and pin the other end to the middle of the circle. Use this to draw a bigger circle that’s the size of the shield you’re making.

2

Cut out the big circle, then draw a bold design on the

front of the shield using a pencil. Next, carefully paint your design and wait for it to dry.

British Archaeology on 13–28 July by making your own cool Viking shield!

3

To make the shield’s central ‘boss’ (the middle bit that

protected the Viking’s hand), turn your paper bowl upside down. Scrunch up the newspaper into a ball, squash it down a bit, and then fix it on top with masking tape.

4

Now, spread the PVA glue over the top of the

bowl and cover it with tin foil, making sure it’s tightly stuck down. Glue the boss securely to the centre of your shield.

5

Finally, tape two strips of cardboard onto the back of the shield, then stick another strip across them, folding it to make the handle. Your shield is now ready for battle!
