Pasaje REC

Spain’s most popular theme park, PortAventura got its Halloween ‘13 celebrations off to an early start last month. The park’s six themed lands have been taken over by zombies and ghosts galore, including a new character in SesamoAventura, the popular Count Von Count of Sesame Street fame. Elsewhere, however there’s a more chilling experience in store with the arrival of Pasaje REC, a 350m-long, 15-scene walk through inspired by the Spanish horror film franchise REC. Featuring a team of 40 actors and video/cinema screens along the route that show images from the films, the result is an all- consuming experience that doesn’t allow a moment’s respite for all 15 spine-tingling minutes guests are inside. Additional walk-through attractions for Hallowen include the popular Selva del Miedo (Jungle of Fear) in the Polynesia area of the park and Horror in Penitence, a macabre maze in the Far West. New live shows for 2013 include Rock Symphony-Mystery, Es Halloween en SésamoAventura and the Vampires: Dinner Show, while the nightly Halloween Parade and Horror en el lago (Horror at the lake) spectacular are back to delight guests for another year,

The Halloween celebrations continue at

PortAventura, about an hour from Barcelona, right through until 17 November. The Pasaje REC experience operates only at weekends.

Tivoli Since 2006, famous Danish amusement park Tivoli has hosted over two million guests as part of its Halloween celebrations, with 418,000 visiting in 2012 alone. In recognition of the event’s growing popularity, an extra week has been added this year, meaning the spooky season runs from 12 to 27 October. Fresh for 2013 is Hotel Scary, a revamp of

the park’s Skærsilden (Purgatory) dark ride. Set inside a haunted hotel from the 1940s, guests encounter narrow corridors and rooms filled with shock effects at every turn. On 26

introduced its first spooky celebrations, and now hosts up to 5,000 guests a night. Now Shocktober Fest is back for 2013, operating for 18 selected nights between 10 October and 2 November. To launch the event, a world record attempt was held on 5 October for the largest gathering of “vampires”. Over 2,000 arrived in costume, enjoying a concert from The Animals plus the first tours of Tulleys’ six haunted houses. Alas, although the current Guinness World Record for most vampires is just 1,039 (set at Virginia’s Kings Dominion amusement park in September 2011), Tulleys missed out because of the strict Guinness dress code for vampires. A new UK record was set, however, with 503 vampires. The winner of seven Screamie Awards, Shocktober Fest is offering six haunted houses and attractions this Halloween including the Haunted Hayride, The Cellar, Woodshock Rottin’ Since 69, Twisted Maze, Hell-Ements and Creepy Cottage. Complementing these are various street entertainment including the Haunted Funfair, Cirque De Shock, Aftershock Bar and more. A firework finale is promised on Sunday 2 November. Tulleys’ experience with Halloween is such that Shocktober Fest founder Stuart Beare is often invited to speak on the subject at various industry events and consult with other attractions. On 11 October the farm even hosted its own “Behind the Screams” Halloween conference.

October, a Monster Night parade will see over 200 freaky performers make their way through the park, and there are also two new live witch shows on the Tivoli lawns.

A regular part of the Halloween i Tivoli (Halloween in Tivoli) festivities is the annual DM i Kæmpegræskar giant pumpkin competition, and this year competitors will be trying to beat last year’s new Danish record-breaker weighing 451.4 kg, pictured here. In total more than 20,000 pumpkins will be distributed throughout the park for during October, but we can’t guarantee they’ll be as big at this whopper!

CHILLS After launching Hobs Pit, the UK’s first dark ride/walk-through attraction hybrid, earlier this year (see Park World, August 2013), Pleasurewood Hills in East Anglia is upping the ante this Halloween as it rebrands as Pleasurewood CHILLS Scream Park. Guests will be able to enjoy seasonal specials such as Hobs Pit: X-Scream, featuring more scares, more actors and more effects than before. The upgraded, extreme experience has been realised together with AtmosFear! Scare Entertainment, operator of Scare Kingdom Scream Park in the north of England. Tales of the Haunted Coast is a transformed version of a family ride, Satan’s Circus Scare Maze is billed as “the most terrifying Scare Maze is the east of England”, while Horror Express invites passengers to walk through a pitch black abandoned train carriage and see what lingers in the shadows. Additional activities for Halloween include ghost hunts, trick or treat trails, spooky storytellers, pumpkin carving and a fancy dress competition. Running from Saturday 26 October to Sunday 3 November, the park has dropped standard admission to just £13.50 ($21.50/1€16.00) during Pleasurewood Chills. A £5 Terror Ticket upgrade is then available for those wishing to sample Hobs Pit X-Scream, Satan’s Circus Scare Maze and Horror Express.
