TOP: York heads south through the appropri- ately named town of Railroad, located just north of New Freedom. The town’s hotel has been nicely restored. Many of the towns along the former Northern Central have Civil War- era buildings that can be used for photo- graphic props. ABOVE: A rare night trip pauses at Glen Rock. While most trips last two and a half hours and go to Hanover Junction, some trips are shorter and turn back at Glen Rock, about halfway up the line.

dressed the crowd at Hanover Junction as if it were that day in 1863. He ex- plained that he was on his way to Get- tysburg to deliver an address the next day, and if the crowd didn't mind he’d like to rehearse his speech. He then de- livered an excellent rendition of the en- tire address. I had read the speech a million times, but to hear it delivered by Lincoln gave me chills — it was real- ly impressive.

As the day wound down, I broke out the flash units for some night shots. With the short days, the afternoon train came back south after dark and I was able to shoot it at the town of Rail- road. The night train provided shots at Glen Rock (where an impressive brick mill is now a restaurant) and passing the hotel back in Railroad once again. Steam Into History has just about everything for the railroad, Civil War or history buff. During the season there are usually multiple trips a day, so rid- ing and chasing in the same day are possible. Reservations are recommend- ed, as the trains have been sold out on many occasions. For photography, the line is closely paralleled by state high- ways (but not so closely that the mod- ern highway interferes with the shots). Just follow your nose and the chase is pretty self-explanatory. York operates on the south end of the trains (a diesel pulls the train north), so photography is good throughout the day.

From its polished locomotive to its quaint coaches to its living history, Steam into History delivers a unique 1860s experience whether you are on board or trackside.
