Deliveries are Set to Begin on Amtrak Long Distance Cars in 2014


AMTRAK’S 130 NEW VIEWLINER II long-distance passenger cars are making their way along the assembly line at the CAF USA assem- bly plant in Elmira Heights, N.Y. The 55 baggage cars, 25 sleepers, 25 baggage/crew dorms, and 25 diners will replace the remaining Budd- built Heritage equipment still in service on Eastern long-distance routes. The cars will carry the new Amtrak America brand along with Phase III equal-width red, white, and blue stripes. The railroad says, “With the launch of our new single-level long distance equipment — the Viewliner II — we are also launching Amtrak America, a brand that

LOCOMOTIVE IS VANDALIZED: Some- time between October 5 and 9, someone cut the wiring in the electrical cabinet of Adiron- dack Scenic Railroad GP9 No. 6076 while it was parked, shut down, at the Lake Placid, N.Y., station. The locomotive provided power on the isolated Lake Placid-Saranac Lake por- tion of the line, where operations have been suspended for the remainder of the season. The damage was discovered when crews tried to start the locomotive on October 9. A $10,000 reward is being offered for informa- tion leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrators. will encompass all that is great about our long-haul trains, including those with sleeper class service. . . . Amtrak America will utilize Phase Three striping on the single-level long distance cars as a tribute to our heritage. The first cars released from production will also carry our her- itage logo [the “pointless arrow”] in honor of our past. Our current logo will return on the standard production cars.” The first Viewliner II’s will be released for road testing in early 2014, with revenue service ex- pected to begin next summer. end of the former New York Central Adiron- dack Branch between Utica, Thendara, and Big Moose, N.Y., along with the northern end between Lake Placid and Saranac Lake; the midsection from Big Moose to Saranac Lake is out of service. The railroad has its detractors and has been targeted politically by snowmo- bile and ATV groups who want it torn up and turned into a recreational trail, which they claim would be more economically beneficial.
