It was the old story of congressional con- cerns over the trains getting in the way of the automobiles, with nary a concern of au- tomobiles getting in the way of trains. Now D.C.’s Department of Transportation has recommended a streetcar line operating along K Street, the “Main Street,” of Wash- ington’s lobbyist community; the line would operate from Union Station to Washington’s tony Georgetown neighborhood. It will be in- teresting to see if that revives the hornet’s nest that erupted when Georgetown activists went out of their way years ago to keep the Metro subway system (which ultimately re- placed the streetcars starting in 1976) out of their community. That effort succeeded, which is one reason the city now envisions a revived streetcar system to supplement and link to the subway. The city’s new proposal is part of its ambitious plan for eventually to install a 37-mile streetcar network.

Speaking of D.C. www.trainsshipsplanes.com

A 2008 report left the distinct impression that Washington’s subway system, in fact, will be at or near capacity at around 2021. The above-mentioned streetcar system — if and when it is built — would connect with the subways, but will not necessarily take up much of the subway’s anticipated over- flow. What to do then? Enter Charles “Sam” Carnaggio, Project Director for the Dulles Corridor Metrorail project which, as its name indicates, is a new subway route (now under construction) ex- tending the Metro subway to Dulles Inter- national Airport and beyond. When I asked Mr. Carnaggio how he thought Washington would deal with its transportation dilemma

if the Metrorail system is bursting at the seams circa 2021, his answer (not necessar- ily reflecting the views of his employer, the Washington Metropolitan Airports Authori- ty, which oversees the Dulles rail project) comes down to this: The federal government’s anticipated con- tinued growth could lead to concurrent pop- ulation expansion, impelling government agencies or new subdivisions thereof to ex- pand throughout the surrounding Maryland and Virginia suburbs. Thus many govern- ment employees will be encouraged to live near where they work. Okay, so what if government officials and employees do need to do some business at the Capitol, the White House, or other busi- ness in the city? That is where the helicopter would come in to transport people on special trips to D.C.

Interesting idea, though our own prognos- tications focus on a more likely scenario of a circle line through the suburbs connecting the various established lines into D.C.

Bombardier Workers Laid Off In Canada, Bombardier Transport is planning to lay off one-quarter of the 600 employees at its plant in La Pocatiere, Que- bec, effective in mid-January. Most will be recalled later for work on a Montreal sub- way contract until 2018, when those cars are slated for delivery. The layoff was prompted by the completion for delivery of 65 multi- level commuter cars for Maryland, whose MARC system operates three lines in the Washington/Baltimore area Wes Vernon is a Washington-based writer and veteran broadcast journalist.
