ber, I’d arrived at the train’s parking lot ear- ly to be sure I had the boarding location cor- rect, and to take a few pictures before an unknown number of passengers showed up. This was a brunch run. It was the University of Missouri’s 2013 Homecoming weekend — ruined, by the way, by Mizzou losing its first football game of the season the night before (I thought that might put a damper on the festivities). Getting there an hour early, I was surprised when a small caravan of vehi- cles began to arrive shortly after I did. As their passengers gathered in the boarding area, it was apparent they knew each other and were in a festive mood. As the 11:00 a.m. boarding time ap-
proached, train General Manager Kris Tillot- son, joined us to deliver our tickets, point us to our assigned car, and resolve one or two re- quests for revised seating arrangements. This is when I learned that, because my reservation was a “single,” I was the only out- sider to share the dining car assigned to the aforementioned group. Even better, they turned out to be of the railfan persuasion,
members of the Gateway Garden Railroad Club (
http://www.ggrrc.org) from St. Louis, Missouri. They were under the direction of Ted Picraux, he of ShuttletrainTED fame (
http://www.trainweb.org/shuttletrain), a rotating host on the American Passenger Rail Heritage Foundation’s Let’s Talk Trains web- cast (
http://www.blogtalkradio.com/lets- talktrains). Kris, meanwhile, energetic, business-like, and busy, was everywhere at once, helping people on board, pointing out seating, an- swering questions. That he later described, in a private conversation, being the younger brother of the train’s former General Man- ager, who passed away recently unexpected- ly, made his enthusiasm, hard work and easy manner all the more remarkable. On board, the young woman waiting on the guests in my car, Andi —“That’s with an ‘i,’” she reminded me — was equally hard working. Attentive, helpful, and a pleasant conversationalist (so skilled at interacting with real people I began to wonder if she even owned a smart phone), she helped peo- ple get comfortably situated, took beverage orders, and confirmed our pre-selected en- trees.
