One of the biggest stories of the last few weeks comes from the US - the governmental shutdown. Some of the government’s busiest agencies and departments were forced to close after Congress failed to reach an agreement regarding the 2014 budget. The shutdown practically ground some of the biggest tourist attractions in the country to a halt, closing the Grand Canyon in Arizona and the Statue of Liberty in New York. However, after a long period of uncertainty, an agreement has now been reached and the government has now reopened. Business as usual!
This month we focus on Europe’s largest economy and one of the economic success stories of recent years – Germany. As part of this we look at the business and legal environments and why the country remains so attractive for corporate ventures. To this end we speak to several key individuals well-placed to provide expert comment, such as the in-house counsel of Nokia, the Secretary General of ICC Deutschland, the German National Committee of the International Chamber of Commerce and the CEO of the German Association of Tax Advisers.
Other exclusive features this month include an interview with Thomas Perrot, partner in the Tax department at Linklaters Paris about the controversy surrounding the financial transaction tax (FTT). We also speak to Mark Surguy from Eversheds about the Olympus prosecution and Jan Corstens, Partner at Deloitte, about the new Trademark Clearinghouse from ICANN.
As always, I hope you enjoy this month’s issue of Lawyer Monthly, and I look forward to bringing you next month’s edition.
