September Editorial by Ron Samson, Associate Publisher
We all love the summer months, but July and August can be frustrating to production-oriented people such as myself. With overworked decision-makers taking well-deserved holidays and many grabbing long weekends whenever they can, a person can sometimes feel like they’re in a hermetic chamber, or the rest of the world has gone back to the mother ship.
With Labour Day behind us, most marine folks in the Great Lakes
and St. Lawrence River are looking to get as much done as pos- sible before the inevitable winter blahs following the closure of the Seaway in late December. In our collective interests, Marine Matters hopes that all parties have a strong final quarter.
This month we will feature an article and show you some unique techniques for underwater repairs without dry-docking. Our pub- lisher, Aldert van Nieuwkoop, questions why underwater repair and maintenance is not more widely used in the marine industry particu- larly since it saves on what can be significant costs in dry-docking a vessel frequently. We’re also taking a comprehensive look at firefighting training in Canada and the United States, and we’ll ex- amine how ports and shipowners approach firefighting/emergency response from in-port and at-sea points of view. We were fortunate to be able to interview and witness a wide scale of firefighting and training facilities both land based as well as vessel based.
Marine Matters would like to extend a very special thank you
to the numerous fire departments and ports on both sides of the border for all of their help in making these two firefighting feature articles possible. In addition, we would like to thank Canfornav for allowing us to witness a firefighting exercise on board their vessel Bluewing.
Our intrepid editor-in-chief, Brent Frederick has taken on new opportunities within the marine industry and we sadly have to say goodbye to him. On behalf of Marine Matters, we thank Brent for his invaluable contributions to making Marine Matters what it is today. Brent no doubt is among the most ethical people I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with. Brent, I refuse to say ‘good luck,’ dear former associate, because you do not need luck. You have ability!
We have a full editorial roster planned for the balance of 2013
and hope our more than 7,000 subscribers continue to enjoy our efforts.
