experience (a minimum of 172 hours) is to provide students with an opportunity to integrate knowl- edge and skills learned and to apply them during intensive practice ses- sions. Students will be required to work in Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) Fire Departments, Fire Prevention Division, and Com- munications Division, prepare public relation campaigns, and will continue to enhance their skills dur- ing continued live fire and practical performance drills. FESTI states that the program

combines current and compre- hensive theoretical firefighting knowledge with industry leading practical skills development. This

program is designed to maximize the students’ practical experience with more than 50 per cent of the time spent participating in practical hands-on skills development and over 20 days of live practical fire- fighting in the on-site burn tower. This level of practical experience cannot be found with any other Col- lege program. Some college programs such as

the one offered at Humber College in Toronto have facility rental agree- ments in place with FESTI. Ian Sim of the registration office told Ma- rine Matters that Humber College graduates an average of 72 students every year, and that all their major drills are carried out at FESTI. The Canadian Armed Forces have

the bar set the highest: training takes years to complete. It is not surprising that most instructors, har- bour fire chiefs and some staff are ex Forces. In fact all the instructors at FESTI are ex Forces.
