Charity calls for schools to help inspire a generation to sign Resources
T
HE NATIONAL deaf healthcare charity SignHealth this October is calling for schools from across the country to sign up for a record breaking attempt designed to inspire a generation to sign. SignHealth is hoping more than 150,000 children and adults will participate in its annual sign2sing world record breaker in February (2014) and help raise awareness of British Sign Language (BSL). Steve Powell, Chief Executive at SignHealth, said: “sign2sing is our annual record breaking attempt for the most people signing and singing a song at the same time.
“We have run the event successfully for the past three years and our aim for the 2014 event is to inspire our next generation of healthcare professionals about the importance of good communication. “Deaf people often find it more difficult than hearing people to access healthcare and health information and because of this, deaf men, women and children are more likely to suffer ill health. By ensuring our next generation of healthcare professionals are aware of deafness and BSL, we will help to break down communication barriers and ensure equal access.” Earlier this year 116,980 teachers and pupils from across the country and overseas took part in SignHealth’s third sign2sing event and broke the Guinness World Records™. The previous record, which the charity also set was 114,277.
Steve added: “On February 5, 2014, we are once again inviting children and adults alike to take part in our world record attempt for the most people signing and singing a song on the same day.” Children and adults from all over the country and overseas will learn to sign a song being composed especially for the event. Schools that register for sign2sing will be able to download free resources, which include a lesson plan.
People who are unable to take part in the record breaking attempt on February 5 are invited to join in with the event during sign2sing week, which takes place from Monday, February 3 until Sunday, February 9. sign2sing is also a fundraiser for SignHealth through a suggested £1 donation from everyone taking part.

Steve continued: “We will be asking children to wear a scarf like our official mascot, Olli the monkey, on the day of sign2sing and donate their £1. Alternatively schools can hold a fundraising event, such as a cake sale, non-uniform day or raffle.”
The money will be used to continue the charity’s work helping to improve the mental and physical health and well-being of deaf children and adults. Steve said: “News of the event is already spreading rapidly and we are hoping to smash our current record and involve more than 150,000 adults and children, while also raising awareness of deafness and the work we are doing at SignHealth.
“Any schools that decide to take part will be joining hundreds of others all over the country and some in other countries on February 5 when they attempt to break the world record. We are hoping more than 1,500 schools and organisations participate in our 2014 event.”
sign2sing takes place on Wednesday, February 5, 2014. Schools that are unable to take part on February 5 are invited to participate during sign2sing week (February 3 until 9, 2014).
