RFID in schools J

ust as laptops and interactive whiteboards have become an integral part of school life in the last decade, RFID technology is now set to play a major role in helping education establishments to manage their assets.

With UK schools losing almost a third of mobile assets through loss and theft - having a devastating effect on annual budgets - UHF RFID tags will enable schools and colleges to track and control electronic equipment. The UK Office of National Statistics estimates that a high school with around 1,000 pupils will report on average a 27% loss or theft of mobile IT assets over the course of a school year. These losses have a huge impact on a schools budget, their ability to deliver a good education and to hit the results targets expected of them.

Using UHF asset tags, which do not require batteries will more than double a schools asset utilisation rate, thereby reducing the need to unnecessarily eat-up a schools valuable budget on costly asset replacement projects. Each RFID tag is programmed with a unique Electronic Product Code (EPC), making the usually inaccurate, time consuming and labour intensive procedure of auditing and inventory management a thing of the past. Instead, the click of a mouse can now produce a 100% accurate IT audit.

For the most valuable assets, the use of Active RFID is becoming more and more commonplace throughout business and healthcare, with education almost certainly set to follow suit in the near future. Active RFID tags are battery-powered and as such can monitor many more variables. For example, an active tag can be set to alert a user when an asset reaches a certain temperature, if an item has been moved from a pre designated RF (Radio Frequency) zone or if an item has been tampered with. These are just standard examples as Active RFID is limited only by the user’s imagination and desire to innovate. A Passive UHF RFID solution can deliver a solid ROI within one school year, as once it is implemented a dramatic impact on asset utilisation, audit and inventory accuracy can be seen – surely a no-brainer for any school?
