Goodbye and good luck P

ractice managers have been getting it from every angle lately. With the move to commissioning, it’s hard not to feel hard done by.

On page 22, we look at the issue of extra services being ‘dumped’ on primary care by the CCGs. Commissioners would see this as collaborating, but practices that aren’t getting paid extra for this ‘collaboration’ may not see it so favourably. Meanwhile, like GPs, practice managers have been suffering from burn-out and as a result, recruitment of practice managers has not been easy of late. On page 46, we look at the main causes of stress in the profession and if there’s anything you can do to attract fresh candidates to fi ll your shoes when (hopefully not if!) you eventually want to retire.

Speaking of leaving jobs, I’m sorry to announce that this is my last editor’s comment, since I’m moving back to my home town of New York City to work as an editor and journalist there. I’m sorry to go, and I’ve truly enjoyed my stint as editor of this magazine.

Our new health editor is named Nikki Withers. She’s an experienced healthcare journalist with a passion for writing about primary care, so you’ll be in good hands. As a fi nal thank you and chance for you to get to know Nikki, I’d like to offer the fi rst 10 people to email editor@practicebusiness.co.uk with the subject line “Julia freebie” to PB Live (our reader event next month: PracticeBusinessLive.co.uk). Wish me luck as I tackle the American healthcare system. Top of my list: get health insurance. A task, during my time in Britain, I’ve been lucky to avoid. So next time the NHS makes you want to scream – remember, at least you have it.
