72309 THE TIN DRUM: A NOVEL by Günther Grass

“Granted: I’m an inmate in a mental institution” are the famous opening words of Nobel Prizewinner Günther Grass’s most iconic novel, published in 1959 and here reissued in a new, contemporary translation. The narrator Oskar Matzerath was born with full powers of mind but when he reached the age of three decided not to grow up any further. This places him at the beginning of the 1930s and with his half-adult, half-childish vision he describes increasing Nazi domination and World War II itself. Oskar is not sure who his father is: is it his mother’s Nazi husband Alfred, or her revolutionary cousin Jan? Oskar’s childish tin drum eventually leads him to a musical career which veers between circus and convent and culminates in his blasphemous claim to be Jesus. 582 roughcut pages. £20 NOW £5.75

72331 ONE DAY IN THE LIFE OF IVAN

DENISOVICH by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn One of those must-read classics. The ‘Gulag archipelago’ of Russian labour camps, established by Stalin as the lifelong prisons of political dissidents, is well established as a horrific symbol of totalitarian repression. This is the book that in 1962 brought life in the prison camps to the world’s attention and made an overnight hero of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. In one prisoner, Ivan Denisovich Shukhob, and one single day of his long sentence, we find a universal Everyman, struggling to make sense of the hand that Fate has dealt him, and determined to survive. Low jacket price. 136pp. ONLY £3.50

72332 DICKENS ON FRANCE edited by John Edmondson

John Edmondson has chosen extracts from these books plus Pictures from Italy, The Uncommercial Traveller and contributions to the weekly magazine Household Words, blending them into an informed survey infused with energy, perception and open-mindedness. 18 illus. 426 pages, paperback. $20 NOW £3.50

72517 LOST JOURNAL OF BRAM STOKER edited by Elizabeth Miller and Dacre Stoker Discovered in the attic of one of Stoker’s descendants, the notebook kept by the author of Dracula consists of 310 entries during the period between 1871 and 1882. Stoker left Dublin for London in 1878, becoming the actor Henry Irving’s manager, but most of these journals are from his formative years observing life in Dublin’s pubs and streets, his civil service colleagues in Dublin Castle, and friends from his days as a student at Trinity College. Early journals include many items on religious and moral subjects: several poems about Mary and Martha of Bethany, and numerous anecdotes about “fallen women” and the wiles they might use to procure a husband. Many of his short story synopses are in Gothic vein, and in 1872 he attends a reading of Edgar Allen Poe’s spooky poem “The Raven”. Raw material was not lacking: a notable theatre character in Dublin was Frank Seymour, who avoided his creditors on one occasion by being carried into the theatre in Ophelia’s coffin. 337pp, photos.

68844 RAGGED TROUSERED

PHILANTHROPISTS by Robert Tressell A classic representation of the impoverished and politically powerless underclass of British society in Edwardian England, ruthlessly exploited by the institutionalized corruption of their employers and the civic and religious authorities. Epic in scale, the novel charts the ruinous effects of the laissez-faire mercantilist ethics on the men, women, and children of the working classes, and through its emblematic characters, argues for a socialist politics as the only hope for a civilized and humane life for all. For this it has long been honoured by the Trade Union movement and thinkers across the political spectrum. With a Foreword by Tony Benn. Paperback, 619pp. ONLY £2

68856 THE CANTERBURY TALES: New Edition by Geoffrey Chaucer

During his life, Geoffrey Chaucer (born c.1340) was courtier, diplomat, revenue collector, administrator, negotiator, overseer of building projects, landowner and knight of the shire. He was servant, retainer, husband, friend and father. It was Boccaccio’s Decameron which inspired Chaucer, in the 1390s, to begin work on The Canterbury Tales, which was still unfinished at his death in October 1400. It tells the story of a group of 30 pilgrims who meet at the Tabard Inn in Southwark, on the south bank of the Thames opposite the city of London, and travel together to visit the then famous shrine of St Thomas Becket in Canterbury cathedral. The tavern host, who accompanies them, suggests that they amuse one another along the way by telling stories. There will be a prize for this: the best storyteller will get a free meal in the tavern on their return. The stories told by the pilgrims range from bawdy comedies through saints’ lives and moral tracts to courtly romances, but are always delivered with a generous helping of Chaucer’s own sly wit and ironic humour. Although based on the stereotypes of ‘estates satire’, his

pilgrims appear as individuals who can be recognised by their audience. This transcription and edition is taken from British Library MS Harley 7334, produced within ten years of Chaucer’s death. The aim of this edition, with on-page notes, is to enable readers with little or no previous experience of Medieval English to read and enjoy this landmark in English Literature. 745pp in Wordsworth paperback. ONLY £4
