In order to live off a garden, you practically have to live in it.

73410 ARCHITECTURAL PLANTS: What to Grow, How

to Grow It by Christine Shaw For a plant to be considered “architectural” it has to have a very strong shape or presence in the garden, preferably throughout the year. Yuccas, palms, agaves and tree ferns have obvious architectural qualities, and some, such as

eucalyptus and arbutus are more understated but make themselves noticed for their bark or glossy leaves. Bananas, hedychiums and cannas make a bold, brash statement and simply cannot be ignored. This book introduces us to 114 of the best, most freely available varieties. In the Collins Practical Gardener series, the book provides comprehensive information on bamboos, grasses, ferns, palms, succulents and other exotics. Each plant entry includes a quick-reference care table and guide to hardiness and there is a wealth of advice on planting styles and combinations, general care, winter protection, pruning, propagating, choosing and buying and assessing the potential of your garden, identify and

resolve pest, disease and cultivation issues. A riot of colour photography and ideas from start to finish. 160pp softback.

71856 GENTLEMEN GARDENERS: The Men

Who Created the English Landscape Garden by Timothy Mowl

It all started when the stage designer Inigo Jones returned from his travels in Italy in 1614: Jones’s flamboyant creations inspired two glorious centuries of landscape gardening, ending with the death of Humphry Repton in 1816. Jones saw garden design in the same terms as a stage set and was determined to discipline nature within the confines of a geometrical frame, for example the impressive grounds of Wilton House and the Covent Garden Piazza which originally featured a garden on the south side. In the mid-century Capability Brown transformed and completed Kent’s vision for Stowe with his trademark clumping of trees round a serpentine lake. Finally Payne Knight and Uvedale Price converted Brown’s restrained informality into a riot of the Picturesque, apotheosized in Repton’s Gothick village of Blaise Castle near Bristol. 218pp, softback, b/ w reproductions.

72603 EVERYTHING YOU CAN DO IN THE

GARDEN WITHOUT ACTUALLY GARDENING by Philippa Lewis

The English like to own a bit of land, even if it is the size of a postage stamp, and once the wheelbarrow and gardening gloves are out of the way the cucumber sandwiches make their appearance. Horticultural entertainments are nothing new, and in 1591 the Earl of Herford created a mock sea battle to entertain Queen Elizabeth I in his extensive grounds, while the Lord Mayor’s fireworks described by Pepys are as spectacular as our present-day New Year displays. A hugely enjoyable social and visual history. 216pp, colour illus. £16.99 NOW £3.50

72610 HISTORIC GARDENS OF CORNWALL by Timothy Mowl

Cornwall had gardens before the Romans came. Its Dark Age saints had holy gardens for baptisms. 150 years ago, the county staged a sub-tropical renaissance and today, the Eden Project has achieved the greatest biosphere of the modern age. Humphry Repton achieved his Claudeian masterpiece at Lord St. Germans’ Port Eliot and gardens fully exploited the warm embrace of the Gulf Stream and near perpetual rain at Trebah, Glendurgan and Caerhays. The Lost Gardens of Heligan may have been found, but more poetic by far is the still sleeping wilderness of Enys. Photos and maps, colour plates. 192 page large softback. £17.99 NOW £5.50
