The Biography by Daniel Tatarsky Between 1950 and 1969 Britain's schoolboys eagerly awaited Friday morning and the delivery of the Eagle comic for their weekly dose of out-of-this-world excitement, and no character was followed more avidly than the suave Dan Dare, a natural leader and, as it said on the cover, Pilot of the Future. Battling with all manner of aliens, all of them close enough to human form to be recognisable but with appearances that ensured you knew they were baddies, Dan preserved our planet for the future on a weekly basis. In this first ever biography and Dan Dare primer, Dan Tatarsky, with the entire Eagle archive at his disposal, researches the adventures of Dare, his co-pilots, family, friends and assorted aliens. Frank Hampson, the original illustrator used real-life models in order to get his trademark action style, and his bold use of colour made the Eagle leap off the newsstand. His successor, Frank Bellamy, had a different style, but one which made Dan & Co just as recognisable. Tatarsky explores the artists' styles and also the fascinating background of the comic's co- founder, the Rev. Marcus Morris. Here too is testimony from surviving original contributors, old interviews with those now passed away, Eagle Club members and famous fans, such as our pal Terry Jones, who contributes the foreword. Packed full with strips, draft drawings, photos and more, mostly in colour. Appendix lists all Dan Dare adventures. 238pp. £14.99 NOW £6.50

73168 PRE-RAPHAELITES by Michael Robinson In 1848, disillusioned with the prevailing academic style and teaching, a group of young students determined to reform art. So Sir John Everett Millais, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Holman Hunt

founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. They were influenced by John Ruskin and his challenge to ‘go to nature’. Inspired by medieval art and culture, and driven by a belief in the spirituality of their work, the group used brilliant colours with meticulous detailing and produced strikingly original and beautiful pictures. Showcasing a stunning collection of both famous and lesser-known paintings from one of the most interesting and important British art movements of the 19th century, this superb volume explores works by Millais, Rossetti, Hunt and their wider circle. It places the Pre- Raphaelites in context, giving an overview of the movement, but demonstrating how each artist maintained his creative idealism and integrity. 384 softback pages absolutely packed with gorgeous pictures, with index by work as well as a general index. £9.99 NOW £5

73111 EMPIRE MARKETING BOARD POSTERS

by Manchester Art Gallery Strong and seductive images which illustrate the British Empire’s people, places and products. Manchester Art Gallery holds a fascinating collection of artist-designed posters, commissioned by the British government’s Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933.

Their main function was to increase sales of Empire- grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain, its Dominions and its Colonies. One aspect was a poster campaign designed to turn Britons into Empire-conscious consumers. Over 200 posters were acquired by the Gallery in the 1930s, at first highly valued as examples of industrial art, they were later lost and forgotten. Skill and industry, Christmas, wartime, rum and sugar from Mauritius, mutton, lamb and apples from the Virgin Lands, the River Mersey, gateway to the Empire in a beautiful colour oil, Jaffa oranges from the Jordon Valley are some of the 200 reproduced in colour in this small softback with unusual gatefold pages explaining the history behind each example. Today may appear prejudiced, racist and quite shocking, but ultimately fascinating both from an aspect of design and modern history. A Scala semi softback. $9.95 NOW £5

73285 LEE MILLER AND ROLAND PENROSE: The

Green Memories of Desire by Katherine Slusher It is not generally known that Miller and Penrose were both artists in their own right and had a relationship that spanned 40 years. This richly illustrated joint biography tells the story of how a fashion model turned photographer and an

English Quaker turned art collector and surrealist painter influenced modern art with their vision and passion, and created a life together that was in itself a work of art. Roland Penrose met Lee Miller’s lips a year before he met the rest of her - in a painting by Man Ray. It was a fitting introduction for two artists who were linked by an art movement that delighted in chance encounters. Together they forged a life joined by a common cause - surrealism. They had a son, Antony, and created a home in the Sussex countryside that drew people from all over the world, among them the artists Max Ernst, Joan Miró, Henry Moore and Pablo Picasso - whose work was made more comprehensible to a broader public by Roland, and who was immortalised in over 1,000 photographic images of the Spanish painter by Lee. Over the past three decades, thanks to the unflagging and often Herculean efforts of their son, their lives and achievements have rightfully taken their place

in the history of 20th century art. Sadly, Lee died seven years before Roland. In his final art piece, aptly entitled The Last One, he pictured Lee’s lips one more time. He died on her birthday. 96 softback pages 27.5cm x 19cm full of plates in colour and b/w, with notes and chronology. £9.99 NOW £5

72509 HEROES AND VILLAINS AT THE NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY: Over 50 Celebrities, Writers and Experts Debate Famous Britons by Gerald Scarfe et al

Gerald Scarfe’s long and prestigious career has included work in many of the world’s best-known publications

including Punch, the Sunday Times, Private Eye and the New Yorker. He is also acclaimed for his innovative, award-winning designs for theatre and cinema. Here, in collaboration with the National Portrait Gallery, he takes portraits of well-known people, whose lives between them span seven centuries, and juxtaposes them with caricatures that depict their villainous side. Refreshingly original, Scarfe’s caricatures reveal the vision of an exceptional draughtsman at work. Matthew Parris’s stimulating introductory essay shows how caricature and portraiture combine to illuminate all sides of an individual’s character. As a writer who has anchored his career in making people laugh at politicians, he appreciates the humour of caricature but also exposes how merciless and unsettling it can be. Arguing their views for and against subjects as wide ranging as Henry VIII, Oswald Mosley, Tracey Emin and Virginia Woolf are famous public figures including Joanna Lumley, the late Ian Rankin, Simon Schama, Peter Hall and Mo Mowlam. Whether deeply empathetic or fiercely hostile, their articles are rich in wit, astute observation and telling insights, as, of course, is Scarfe’s artwork. Altogether the perfect blend of writing and drawing. 160 pages in colour and b/w with short biographies of subjects and biographies of contributors. $40 NOW £12
