Led by longtime national team mem-
ber Pasi Uotila’s 279, Finland just missed posting its third consecutive 1,200 game and topped the American squad, 1,183- 1,126. The Finns captured gold for the fi rst time in 30 years, despite anchor bowler and PBA champion Osku Palermaa throw- ing a team-low 204. Petteri Salonen (258), Tony Ranta (236) and Perttu Jussila (206) rounded out the squad. Tommy Jones led Team USA with a 257.
Bill O’Neill posted a 248 and Chris Barnes shot 235, but John Janawicz (194) and John Szczerbinski (192) failed to break 200 in the high-scoring aff air. “This is special,” gushed the normally stoic Uotila. “Exactly 30 years ago was the
last time Finland won the team event, and my dad was on that team. That makes this a dream come true.” For a while, it didn’t look like Finland
would reach the medal round, but 1,225 and 1,234 in their fi nal two games of qualifying pushed the Finns past Puerto Rico by 44 pins to earn the fourth seed. Finland dispatched top-seeded Korea in one semifi nal, while Team USA knocked off Denmark in the other. Team USA also failed to defend the
women’s team title it earned in Hong Kong in 2011, falling in the gold medal match to hot-shooting Korea, 1,159-992. Kim Moon-Joeng led the onslaught with 267, while Lee Na-Young (246), Son Yun-
